'Unity Greeter Badges ': Bring the missing session icon back to the Ubuntu logon screen.

A new software package in Ubuntu 15.04 solves the micro-word I use for Unity's welcome screen: Other Linux desktop sessions like Cinnamon do not have a badge icon.

I know this is a bit of nitpicking; this is just a visual flaw that has almost no impact on most people. However, this kind of inconsistency is always around me, so I am not bothered because some Ubuntu sessions contain badges, including Unity, GNOME, and KDE. The remaining desktop environments, including some of their own ancillary products, such as Xubuntu, only display a white dot that cannot be simplified in the session switching list and the main user interface.

This kind of inconsistency caused by these dots inspires my nerves, even if it is just transient, but this kind of stimulus comes not only from design, but also from availability. The signage helps us know which session we are about to log on.

For example, can you tell us what session this is?

Budgie? Maybe it's MATE? It can also be Cinnamon ...... I must click it to know.

There is no need to do this. Building Unity Greeter is to enable desktop developers to deploy badges on the welcome screen (some do ). But in many cases, like MATE, its package comes from the upstream Debian, and it is not advisable or possible to port a "Ubuntu-specific patch package.

A solution is released

Doug Torrance, an experienced Debian maintainer, has a solution to fix this availability defect. Instead of relying on the desktop maker to add branded badges to their packages, rather than adding the burden of maintaining them to Ubuntu, torrance should have created an independent 'unity-greeter-badges 'package to accommodate them.

Assuming that the session flag is directly provided, the package ensures that the new and old window managers, sessions, and desktops can be used simultaneously.

In the list of about 30 desktop environments, it binds a new session badge to the following desktop:

  • Xubuntu
  • Cinnamon
  • MATE
  • Cairo-Dock
  • Xmonad
  • Awesome
  • OpenBox
  • Pantheon

Most importantly, 'Unity-Greeter-Badges 'has been included in Ubuntu 15.04. This means that the Torrance package can be directly installed without PPA or download. Instead of being a part of the core package like Unity Greeter, it can update new icons in a more efficient and timely manner.

If you are running Ubuntu 15.04, you can obtain and install the package from the software center in the near future.

Don't want to wait 15.04? Torrance has installed a. deb installer for Ubuntu 14.04 and Ubuntu 14.10 users.
