But in fact there is a quick package, do not use the Stringio module

Compress files that already exist
after python2.7, you can use the WITH statement

Import gzip
with open ("/path/to/file", ' RB ') as Plain_file:
  with Gzip.open ("/path/to/file.gz", ' WB ') as Zip_ File:
    zip_file.writelines (Plain_file)

If you don't think about Cross-platform, just on the Linux platform, this is a much more straightforward approach
