Windows Vista Determines whether it is genuine by product serial number--or key, product key, CD key, and volume License key (VLK), which may appear in the future for big customers. Only the correct serial number can activate Windows Vista, otherwise Windows Vista can only be used in lean mode.
In some cases, when we install Windows Vista, we may be able to enter the wrong serial number for an operation error or other reason, which cannot be verified through Windows Genuine and cannot be activated. So, do we need to reinstall Windows Vista at this time with the correct serial number?
The answer is no, we can change the product serial number used in the system after installing Windows Vista, without affecting the normal use of the system.
Change the Windows Vista serial number in the graphical interface
This is the most common and most convenient way. We can change the product serial number in the Windows Vista System Properties page.
To open the System Properties page, you can use the following methods:
Right-click the computer icon on the desktop and select Properties.
Click "Start" => "Control Panel" => "System" (when the Control Panel uses Classic view);
Click "Start" => "Control Panel" => "System and Maintenance" => "system" (when the control Panel uses the classified view);
In the Windows activation item at the bottom of the System property page, you can see the UAC feature item, "Change Product Key (K)," with a small shield callout, click it and then enter the correct serial number (25-digit number).
Note: For Windows Vista, which has entered a lean mode, such as Windows Vista RTM, which has exceeded the test deadline, the feature item that appears here is "re-enter the product Key", which has the same implementation functionality as "Change product Key".
To change the Windows Vista serial number using the command line
For advanced users, you might prefer to use the command line to change the Windows Vista serial number--so you can show the level of technology!
First, open the Command Line window as an administrator.
In the Command Line window, enter:
SLMGR.VBS-IPK the serial number to be entered
Where slmgr.vbs will start the Windows Licensing administration tool, and the "-ipk" option is to replace the current key;
Use the product serial number you have entered to activate Windows Vista, using the following command:
Slmgr.vbs–ato
In this way, the serial number in Windows Vista is replaced by a new serial number.
