KDE Plasma 5.2 has been released for some time, and in this article we will see how to install KDE Plasma 5.2 on Ubuntu 14.10.

Ubuntu's default desktop environment unity is beautiful and a lot of features, but if you ask any experienced Linux user about desktop customization capabilities, his answer will be KDE. KDE is the king of customization and it gets popular probably because Ubuntu has the official KDE version, which is KUBUNTU3.

The good news for Ubuntu (or any other Linux system) is that they are not tied to any particular desktop environment, and you can install additional desktop environments and switch between different desktop environments. Earlier we have learned about the installation of the desktop environment as follows.

How to install the KDE Plasma 5.2 on Ubuntu 14.10

Before installing plasma on Ubuntu 14.10, you should know that this will download about 1GB of content. So consider the speed and data storage space before you install KDE. The PPA we use for downloading is officially provided by the KDE community. Use the following command in the terminal:

The code is as follows:

sudo apt-add-repository ppa:kubuntu-ppa/next-backports

sudo apt-get update

sudo apt-get dist-upgrade

sudo apt-get install kubuntu-plasma5-desktop plasma-workspace-wallpapers

In the installation, we want to select the default display manager. My choice is the default LIGHTDM. When the installation is complete, reboot the system. When you log in, click the Ubuntu icon next to the login area. Choose plasma here.

You are now logged into the KDE plasma. Here's a screenshot of KDE Plasma 5.2 under Ubuntu 14.10:
