About Vector fonts Type1/truetype/opentype

A vector font is a font that corresponds to a bitmap font. Each glyph of a vector font is described by a mathematical equation, and a zigzag is divided into several key points, and the adjacent key points are connected by a smooth curve, which can be uniquely determined by a finite number of parameters. The advantage of the vector word is that the font can be scaled without distortion. The current mainstream vector font format has 3 kinds: Type1,truetype and OpenType, these three formats are platform-independent.

Type1 Full name PostScript Type1 is a set of vector font standards that were presented by Adobe in 1985, because this standard is based on PostScript Description Language (PDL), PDL is also the preferred Print description language for high-end printers, so Type1 is rapidly catching on. But Type1 is an open font, Adobe imposes a hefty royalty on companies using Type1.

TrueType is the 1991 by Apple and Microsoft Company to propose another set of vector word standards.

Type1 uses three Bezier curves to describe glyphs, and TrueType uses two Bezier curves to describe glyphs. So Type1 's fonts are more accurate and aesthetically pleasing than TrueType fonts. One misconception is that Type1 fonts occupy more space than TrueType fonts. This is because the same description of a circular, two Bezier curve only need 8 key points and 7 segments two times curve, and three times the Bezier curve requires 12 key points and 11 segments three times curve. The reality, however, is that generally speaking Type1 is about 10% smaller than TrueType. This is because for a slightly more complex glyph, TrueType must use more key points in order to keep it smooth. Since most modern printers use PDL as a print description language, True1 fonts will not produce deformation, speed, and TrueType needs to be translated into PDL, due to the changes in the curve equation, but also produce a certain deformation, as Type1 beautiful.
So, Type1 should have an advantage over TrueType, why are TrueType computers more widely used today than Type1?
This is because the first: Type1 because of the complexity of the font equation, so when rendering on the screen, spend more time, the solution is that most of the Type1 fonts embedded in the dot matrix font, so the rendering fast, but the edge is not smooth, relatively ugly. Many PS documents and PS converted PDF documents are like this, when browsing on the computer font is very difficult to read, but printed out very beautiful. TrueType is rendered faster and can be displayed smoothly on the screen, looking beautiful. The second reason for the
is the high usage fee of Type1, which makes Type1 not supported by all operating systems. Only OS/2 and Windows 2000 and later versions of Windows family support Type1 from the operating system level. Because of this problem, Adobe has to embed Adobe Type Manager (ATM) as the rendering engine in all its products.

The

OpenType is the final product of Type1 's contention with TrueType. In 1995, Adobe and Microsoft started working together to develop a font that is compatible with Type1 and TrueType and that really supports Unicode, which was later officially named OpenType when it was released. OpenType can embed Type1 and TrueType, which has both characteristics, whether on the screen or print, the quality is very good. It can be said that OpenType is a three-win outcome, both Adobe, microsoft and end users, have benefited from the OpenType. The Windows family starts with Windows 2000 and officially supports OpenType. Open the system's font directory (usually c:windowsfonts or c:winntfonts), you can see: A red a icon is a dot matrix font, two overlapping T icon is a TrueType font, an O icon is the OpenType font.
