About service Programs

The system services covered in this article refer to some Windows 2000 applications running in the background, some of which run automatically with Windows startup to provide system service support when needed (Windows 2000 is based on NT architecture). They are very similar to some other background applications, such as virus firewalls. The main difference is that they are installed as Windows 20,001 and provide stand-alone or network services as part of the system. Often, even after we have done some system optimizations or cleanup work, there are still many system services running in the background by default. Computer Management

W2K brings a tool to access all important system performance, called the Microsoft Management Console (Microsoft Management console,mmc). You can start management tools in a variety of ways:

Double-click the mouse on either service (or right-click, select Properties to see the Service Properties window, which contains more details about the service, such as name, description, login type, dependencies, execution path, and so on.

If you do not want a service to run, you can have two choices: disable it completely so that it cannot be accessed again, or you can set it to "manual" in the attribute's "Startup Type", and then not start automatically every time you enter Windows, and activate it manually when needed. In this way, we can simply use MMC to manage services and change the "Automatic" to "manual" mode. Now, let's take a look at the service items that are usually available, and we should let it start automatically when we enter Windows.

If you look at the list and find that some of the services that are mentioned do not appear in the list, don't worry, because different versions, installation methods, the results will be slightly different. Similarly, if the services in the list are not mentioned here, you can double-click and view more information through the Properties window. But be careful! We do not want to disrupt the function or stability of the system. If you're not sure or think the system might need this service, put it aside. It is not worthwhile to take risks for a little extra memory. Also, if you find that you have disabled a service that you need, you can reactivate the service at any time by the same steps.

Some of these system service items are listed below:

Alerter: Notifies selected users and computers about system management-level alerts. If your computer is a separate platform (not networked), you can turn it off, and if your machine is connected to a LAN, ask the system or network administrator if it should be used or closed.

DHCP Client: Manages network configuration by registering and changing IP addresses and DNS names. If your machine does not need to connect to a local LAN DNS server, such as Cable Modem or office LAN, you can close it. It seems that if the shutdown is not online ...?

Indexing Service: Indexed content and attributes of files on local and remote computers; fast access to files through flexible query language. This service is not activated by default and you can activate it. This will create the index files and folders on your hard drive, especially if the files on your hard disk are too messy, you can speed up your search every time. If you don't use search frequently, you can keep it in the default state.

IPSEC Policy Agent: Manages IP Security policies and initiates Isakmp/oakley (IKE) and IP security drivers. This service is about IP security. Unless you plan to build a virtual personal network on your computer (vpn,virtual private network), you can close it.

Messenger: Sends and receives a message from a system administrator or an "alarm" service. If you turn off the Alerter service mentioned earlier, you can also turn off the Messenger service.

Print Spooler: Loads a file into memory for later printing. If you do not have printers and people do not print files from this machine, do not hesitate to close it. Perhaps, some applications need it, then you can make it automatically activated.

Remote Registry Service: Allows remoting registry operations. If you do not want to remotely access or modify the registry, close it.

Removable Storage (manager): Manages removable media, drivers, and libraries. If you don't use a tape, Jaz, Zip, syquest or other removable drive, you can turn it off.

RunAs Service: Enables the startup process under different credentials. If you don't use aliases (such as a different user) to run the program, you can close it.

Telephony: Provides TAPI support for programmatic control of local computers, servers, and telephony devices on the LAN and ip-based voice connections. If you do not use any program to establish a voice connection, such as Netmeeting, or Internet telephony, you can close it.

Summarize:
