Gigabit Ethernet does not simply overlay the Ethernet we know, although it should be easily integrated into the existing network and easy to use and manage, however, this overload Ethernet technology requires higher performance products and compliance with standards.


I. Solutions to Gigabit Ethernet networks


Gigabit Ethernet uses the same Ethernet frame as 10 Mbps and Mbps. The minimum frame is 64 bytes and can also work in half duplex mode. It also uses the CSMA/CD media access control mechanism, to solve the problem of providing enough network diameter in half duplex mode, the Gigabit Ethernet system needs to increase the budget. The 802.3Z Committee redefined the MAC Layer for Gigabit Ethernet, the method of extending the duration of a short frame on the channel by means of carrier extension and frame group transmission to reach the extended distance is used to increase the duration of a short frame to 512 bytes. In this way, the two sites can directly connect to a Gigabit Ethernet relay to provide a total network diameter of 200 meters. However, additional extensions increase the overhead on the network. In practice, CSMA/CD is not used when full duplex mode is used. Full-duplex Gigabit Ethernet systems are 10 times faster than full-duplex Ethernet systems for frames of any size.


Ii. Gigabit Ethernet network Specification


Technical standards:


1. 1000BASE-SX is the 802.32 standard for short-wave (850nm) laser transceiver working on Multimode Optical Fiber. When using a 62.5 micron multimode optical fiber, the connection distance can reach 260 meters, when 50 micron multimode optical fiber is used, the connection distance is up to 550 meters;


2. 1000BASE-LX is the 802.3z standard for long-wavelength (1300nm) laser transceiver working on single-mode or multi-mode optical fiber. When using a Multimode Optical Fiber of 62.5 microns, the connection distance is up to 440 meters. When using a 50 micron multimode optical fiber, the connection distance is up to 550 meters. When using a single-mode optical fiber, the connection distance is up to 3000 meters;


3. 1000BASE-CX is a low-cost, high-quality copper cable that shields twisted wires or coaxial cables. The 802.3z standard is developed with a connection distance of up to 25 meters;


4. 100 BASE-T Gigabit Ethernet physical layer standard developed by 802.3ab, which specifies the working mode of the-meter-long 4 pairs of Category5 unshielded twisted cables. When promoting to a Gigabit Ethernet network, you must follow its technical specifications. You cannot simply add a gigabit network device or replace the original Ethernet device.


3. Gigabit Ethernet Card


When you consider increasing the transmission rate of servers and powerful workstations to 1 Gbps, you must carefully select a Gigabit Ethernet NIC. When the transmission rate reaches 1 Gbps, the CPU will not be able to adapt to the network throughput, unless the NIC provides smart host auxiliary functions, the same is true for routers on Gigabit Ethernet and existing low-capacity switches.


Theoretically, the throughput of a workstation depends on its bus, memory structure, and CPU speed. A 32-bit computer with a bus can only generate 1 Gbps of traffic, the 64-bit PCI bus has a higher throughput (2 Gbps ).


Gigabit Ethernet requires a third-generation Adapter. Its main feature is a streamlined Instruction Set Computing processor that performs smart and host-specific offmount functions. Incoming data is directly transmitted from the Internet to the host memory unit, the application immediately adjusts it for access, eliminating multiple interruptions during packet replication.


The high-performance gigabit Ethernet adapter will judge network activity and construct a Gigabit Ethernet solution.


Iv. Gigabit Ethernet Switch


As Gigabit communication streams pass through the LAN trunk, the trunk switch must play a high-end role by exchanging and transmitting mixed information consisting of data, graphics, sound, and images, communication Management, congestion control, and Quality of Service (QoS) were not solved in ATM until recently. These problems have become a concern for Gigabit Networks.


Therefore, in addition to increasing bandwidth, the role of a Gigabit Ethernet switch is essentially different from that of a 10 Mbps Ethernet switch and a Mbps Ethernet switch. This is the main difference between these products.
