Market research company Appthority's latest report shows that the overall risk level of iOS applications is higher than that of Android applications. Among the top 100 apps on the iOS platform, more than 91% of apps have security vulnerabilities, or may cause user data to be leaked; of the top 100 apps on the Android platform, only 83% leak personal and company information of users.

Domingo guider, President and co-founder of Appthority, said, "When app users consider mobile security, they often think of malware, this problem is more serious on the Android platform. However, the time spent on apps, phone bills, and devices for iOS devices exceeds that for Android users. Because of this, app developers treat iOS users differently from Android users. Overall, the sense of security in the market we see is completely an illusion ."

Appthority pointed out in the report that there are a variety of risky behaviors, including geographic location tracking (70% of free iOS and Android apps have this problem) weak authentication procedures, data sharing with advertising networks, obtaining contact lists, and obtaining user or device IDs. Even if Apple later prohibits app developers from accessing the unique device identifier, 100 of the top 26% apps on the iOS platform will still display the unique device identifier, this ratio is 6 percentage points higher than the data in the report released by Appthority in last July.

"Application developers do not develop applications in the optimal way. Sometimes they use third-party tools, third-party function libraries, or software developer suites. Although this can speed up application development, it will bring new privacy issues ." In addition to disclosing users' Facebook friends, the top-ranking applications can also leak sensitive company information, resulting in the leakage of company employee phone numbers and receiving a large number of enterprise spam.

"Location tracking is not very important for the vast majority of people. However, from the enterprise perspective, the geographic location information of executives will be tracked. If you know where all executives of Google (Weibo) are located one day, you may predict who will be the next target of Google's purchase. The calendar application can also cause many problems because users use calendars to store meeting content, topics, confidential notes, and attendee information ."

Appthority also found that 200 of the top 95% free apps on iOS and Android platforms have at least one risky behavior, while only 80% of paid apps. Among the top 200 free apps on iOS and Android platforms, 31% of free apps enter the user's contact list or phone book, which is higher than 22% of paid apps.
