The Active Directory Rights Management Service (AD rms-windows Server Active directory Rights Management Services) is an information protection technology that protects digital information from unauthorized use, along with applications for AD RMS activation. Content owners can define exactly how the recipient uses this information, such as who can open, modify, print, forward, or use the message or file for other activities. Companies can create custom use rights templates, such as "confidential-read-only" templates that can be used only directly for information such as financial reports, product descriptions, customer data, and e-mail information.
Built in the Windows Server 2008 system in AD RMS, there are significant improvements and enhancements to RMS, compared to 2003, such as installation without a separate download, no need to connect to Microsoft for registration, and so on.
AD RMS server and client system processing, step one: Start issuing user license to request AD RMS content license. Once a user has issued an account certificate through the RMS server, the user can protect the content. This makes the RMS protection of the document simple; the RMS feature is built into Microsoft's application products, such as Microsoft Office Word and Microsoft Office Excel. The RMS server binds the information content and encrypted content of the rights to protect against unauthorized access. When a user tries to view or otherwise use a protected document, the RMS server beeps and checks the user's permissions to issue a decryption and use license.
Before Windows Server 2008, the content that an external user needs to enter RMS protection must have a local user account. This is no longer needed after simplifying external account management.
