Usually a lot of people get used to selecting the Insert | page number command to insert a page number from the menu, and the resulting page number will add page numbers to both the cover page and the table of contents. Now you want the covers and directories to have no page numbers, add page numbers from the contents of the catalog, and number the page numbers starting at 1. This also benefits from the setting of the section.

Press Ctrl + Home shortcuts to quickly navigate to the beginning of the document, select View | header and footer from the menu, and go to the header and footer edit status as shown in Figure 18.

Click the toggle between Headers and footers button in the Header and Footer toolbar to expand this picture and display the footer area, as shown in Figure 20.

Note the prompt text in the upper-left corner of the footer that shows "Footer – Section 1th –" indicates that the footer is currently set for section 1th. Because section 1th is a cover page and you don't need to add page numbers in the footer area, you can click the Show Next button on the Header and Footer toolbar to display and set the footer for the next section.

The 2nd section is the footer for the table of contents, and you don't need to add anything, so continue clicking the Show Next button.

The footer in section 3rd, as shown in Figure 21, notes that the upper-right corner of the footer displays the same as the previous tip, which means that the footer in section 3rd is the same as section 2nd. If you insert a page number in the footer area now, the page number will appear in the footer of all sections, so don't be in a hurry to insert the page number.

There is a "previous" button in the Header and Footer toolbar, by default, it is in a pressed state, click this button, and cancel the previous setting, when the "same as previous" prompt in the upper-right corner of the footer disappears, indicating that the footer for the current section is different from the previous section.

When you insert a page number, you can make the page number appear only in the current section and other sections that come after it.

Select the Insert | page Numbering command from the menu to display the page Number dialog box, as shown in Figure 22. Use the default settings. Click the Format button to display the page Number Format dialog box, as shown in Figure 23. By default, page numbering is set to last section, which indicates that the number continues in the previous section. If this setting is used, the pages in sections 1th and 2nd are automatically calculated, and then the previous page number is continued in the current 3rd section, so this section does not start with the 1th page. Therefore, you need to set the start page number to 1 in page numbering, which is not related to whether the previous section has a page number.

The other sections after section 3rd do not need to set the page number, because the default setting for the footer is "previous" and the page number format defaults to "continue before", and automatically page numbering for each section.

Click the Close button on the Header and Footer toolbar to exit the footer edit status.

You can view the settings for each page footer with print preview, where there are no page numbers for the covers and directories, and the table of contents will be followed by the page number on each page, and the page number after the table of contents starts at 1.
