Operations Case: HP server, Linux system extended/home partition with data protection

    • Department Requirements: The Research and Development Department proposes to expand disk space on existing servers to meet the disk requirements of the development environment. The existing space 1.6T needs to be increased to 2T.

    • Requirements Survey Analysis: 1, Hardware environment: Server HP dl380 GEN9, disk Configuration (600g*4), RAID5; there are currently 4 hard disk slots available. 2, System: Ubuntu 1404, the overall system space 1.6T. /partition 100g/home partition 1.6t/swap 20G. The number of servers with this requirement is 5 units.

    • Solution: 1, add HDD: Add 1 600G HDD. 2. Raid adjustment: Increase the disk on the existing RAID and expand the logical disk capacity accordingly. 3, Extended partition: Ubuntu system on the basis of logical disk capacity expansion/home partition space.

It's a simple requirement, and I've been dealing with a similar requirement before, but I didn't expect to find this HP server in the process of tuning raid.

What's the problem? Look down ....

Since 5 servers are already in application, in order to minimize the impact on the business unit, I first look for a light-load server test, the main purpose: the time required to calculate this operation during the test (this operation must inform the user of business interruption time), and effectively determine the risk of this adjustment.

Implementation steps:

First, add the hard drive: Needless to say, hot-swappable.

Second, RAID adjustment

1, the existing raid on the addition of disk before the article introduced the HP dl380 GEN8 later version, F10 can automatically enter the HP SSA interface, that is, set up raid. HP GEN9 can also be adjusted by the following interface.

2, increase the disk as follows to select the logical device, you can see that there are currently 4 600G disk

Select the management drive as follows

In normal terms there will be an option to add the hard drive, you just have to choose,

But the problem comes, no add driver, only this "mobile drive" option, which is not what I wanted at all.

I want to add disk options why not, I remember G7 version have Ah, so I in this interface over and over again, (mind pondering may GEN9 newness, may this function is hidden), when the first consideration may be the issue of firmware, but can not directly connect the official website update firmware, can only download HPE SSAS Startup disk or download firmware upgrade ~-~ cry ...

(In fact, this is only the firmware version of the bug, the upgrade of the HP firmware will be resolved, the previous article has said "what to do before installing services," one of which is to upgrade the firmware version, this time has also been upgraded due to the HP website has been skipped, but did not expect to upgrade the firmware will not have this feature, do not do , there is no knowing that the problem exists)

Here to say more, the server firmware version upgrade and mobile phone upgrade, such as a stable version after the upgrade, after all, stability above all.

There's a way to fix it. I'm going to use the download HPE SSA starter disk to boot from CD to adjust RAID tuning raid

(See, finally see, here normal should have two options, add drivers, here only add a piece)

Configuration is complete, see the following interface.

OK, at this time to add the hard drive finished, the rest is waiting, operation is simple, but the raid plus hard drive needs to be converted (backstage called tranforing), process, in the ILO backstage you can see him in the downgrade processing to do the conversion

It's a long, long, long time ... at least one night. After the conversion, start extending the logical disk (you can't see this option when you're done)

Select, extend logical drivers, expands to maximum.

Next see below, the original 1.6G has been extended to 2.1T.

After the completion, or ... Wait. After about 2 hours, you will see the following interface, the logical disk has grown to 2T. The hardware layer's expansion operation is complete.

The next step is to adjust the partition at the system level.

3, because it is Ubuntu system, in the area of partition expansion is not as simple as Windows (Windows directly right-click extension) and this Ubuntu is not LVM partition, is the normal EXT4 partition. Only use the FDISK command extension or the third-party tool extension. My advice here is to use the third-party tool GParted, the graphical interface operation compared to the FDISK command line operation is simple, controllability is high.

"GParted tools to adjust partition operation steps"

Use Ubuntu Live CD to boot, CD-ROM comes with gparted tool, (the system itself does not have gparted, after installation, adjust the local home/home needs umount and more steps to support)

1) after booting through the live disc, open the GParted tool and you will see the disk partition. The following/dev/sda2 are extended partitions,/DEV/SDA5 swap partitions,/dev/sda6/home partitions, and additional unallocated 500 multi-g spaces are available for extended disk space.

2) Swap off now, if you do not close swap, you will not be able to expand the partition (you can try to do not close the environment) right-click/dev/sda5, select Swapoff can

3) Adjust "Extended Partition": objective to enlarge the overall space of/dev/sda2 (it is explained that the current maximum partition is not allowed to exceed 2T, so the increase should be controlled to increase the maximum value)

Here we're tuned to 1.9T.

4) Expand the/dev/sda6 in this way, that is, expand the home last extension finished the interface below, do not forget the point "app" to take effect. (is the check mark on the menu)

This speed will be faster, after completion, reboot into the system to see if the partition has increased.

OK, Success! Without affecting any data, the/home partition has been expanded from the original 1.6T to 2T.

Summarize

In fact, the operation is not complicated: follow-up implementation needs to pay attention to 3 points,

1, the raid adjustment time is too long, the subsequent need in the evening operation. Arrange the time.

2, although the overall operational risk is very low, but also to recommend the user-side backup importance, after all, operational risk, operation and maintenance needs to be cautious.

3. Need to prepare relevant tools (HP Ssa/ubuntu Live CD) before implementation

Finally, the Windows expansion space is much simpler than this. If you are interested, please pay attention to our public number: Ithelpyou
