Aliyun How to enlarge a data disk (Windows instance)

As your business grows, your disk capacity may not meet your data storage needs, and you can expand the disk.

The methods described in this document apply only to data disks . If you want to enlarge the system disk , you need to replace the system disk. Please refer to the replacement system disk.

Information on expansion

Before expansion

It is recommended that you manually create snapshots to back up your data before you enlarge the disk.

If you are performing an action to create a snapshot on disk, the expansion operation is not allowed at this time.

Only do disk capacity expansion, do not do file system expansion.

Supports the expansion of the normal disk, does not support the local disk (local disks, local SSD disk) expansion.

A data disk mounted on an instance that can be expanded only if the instance is in the running (Running ) or stopped (Stopped ) state.

After the expansion

After using the ECS console or the open API to expand the disk, you need to restart the instance with the ECS console or with the open API before it can take effect.

The disk after the expansion takes effect still requires the user to manually format the extended storage space.

Windows 2003 version

The Windows 2003 version is somewhat different from the later version of Windows in the expansion operation.

This example selects the initial disk size of GB and we expand it to GB.

First go to the Disk List page, click More, select Expansion, the following figure:

After entering the expansion page, fill in the capacity after the expansion of the disk size, click to enlarge .

You can also use OPENAPI to enlarge the operation directly:

Resizedisk--diskid=d-94psj4qii--newsize=25

Reboot the server. Go to the Instance List page, click More , and choose Reboot.

Or use OPENAPI to restart the operation:

Rebootinstance--instanceid=i-94psj4qii

Log on to an ECS instance.

Click start > My Computer , right click, select Admin .

After you open the Admin interface, select storage > Disk Management for the left navigation bar, click the disk you want to expand, and choose to convert to a dynamic disk .

description : Basic disk converted to dynamic disk, the operation will be the disk from the system uninstall, before the operation, please confirm whether the data disk installed in the application, the process of conversion is temporarily unavailable, the conversion process will not lose data. If you are still not comfortable with data security, you can manually create quine before you manipulate it.

Right-click the letter (D) that requires expansion, and then select the extended volume (the original data will not be lost) and follow the prompts to proceed to the next step.

Complete the expansion.

Note : The newly purchased space is automatically added to D when finished, but there are multiple volumes in the Disk Manager that are different from the Windows 2008 expansion process. In Windows 2003, as many times as you can expand, you will create a number of independent volumes that will not incorporate all the volumes into the previous volume, but will not affect actual use.

Versions of Windows 2008 and above

This example takes Windows Server 2008 as an example. The remaining versions of Windows 2008 are similar.

The initial disk size in the example is GB, and we expand it to GB.

Go to the Disk List page, click More , and select expansion .

After entering the expansion page, fill in the capacity after the expansion of the disk size, click to enlarge .

You can also use OPENAPI to enlarge the operation directly:

Resizedisk--diskid=d-94tomxanq--newsize=70

Or use OPENAPI to restart the operation:

Rebootinstance--INSTANCEID=I-94LW423M7
