To solve the problem of slow startup of XP, you must first understand the system startup process. The startup process for Windows XP can be broadly divided into 5 steps: First, pre-boot: First the computer is powered on for self-test, and the BIOS (i.e. the basic input and output system) scans the hardware and completes the basic hardware configuration, then reads the hard disk's MBR (Master boot record) to check the hard disk partition table to determine the boot partition. The operating system boot sector on the boot partition is called into memory for execution, where the NTLDR (OS loader) file is executed. The second step, start: First, the NTLDR will convert the processor to 32-bit protection mode. Then read the boot. ini file. The third step,. Load kernel: Boot process starts loading XP kernel NTOSKRNL.EXE. This file is located in the SYSTEM32 folder under the WINDOWS2000/XP installation folder. The hardware abstraction layer (HAL) is then loaded by the boot process to complete this step. Fourth, initialize the kernel: The kernel completes the initialization, NTLDR transfers control to the WINDOWS2000/XP kernel, which starts loading and initializing the device driver, and starts the WIN32 subsystem and windowsxp service. The fifth step is for the user to log in, and after logging in, XP will continue to configure the network device and user environment. Finally, with the system's boot music and our familiar desktop, Windows XP's lengthy startup process is finally complete.

Knowing the startup process of XP, we can take measures to speed up the start-up.

1. Prohibit unused peripherals

Prior to the start-up process we know that XP automatically scans the hardware when it starts up, so if you disable some peripherals in WinXP, you can effectively reduce the number of peripheral drivers that need to be tuned in when the system starts up, thus speeding up the system's startup speed. If you do not have a USB device on your computer, disable all USB devices in Device Manager-Universal Serial Bus controller. This method can reduce your XP boot time by about 15 seconds. Second, if you don't have multiple hard drives installed, you can also disable some IDE devices to speed up startup. Do this: Right click on "My Computer-Properties", then click on "Hardware" and then click on "Device Manager", in which "IDE ata/pata Controller" (slightly different chips), and then enter the primary and secondary IDE channel, select "Advanced Settings", here to find "current transfer mode" as One of the "Not applicable" (this is the equivalent of an unused IDE channel), set the device type of this item to none, and OK. Also note: Because the system will automatically read the optical drive by default, so the drive will be detected at startup, if the CD-ROM is placed in the optical drive, it will be automatically read, if it is a multimedia disc then the time spent on reading will be longer, also extend the computer's startup time. So we recommend that you always use the CD-ROM in time to take out.

2. Reduce the program loaded at startup

Probably a lot of people have this feeling: XP boot speed in the initial stage of the system is relatively fast, but as the installation of software continues to increase, the system will start more and more slowly. This is because many software put themselves in the startup program, so that the boot is required to run, greatly reducing the boot speed, but also occupy a large number of system resources. For such programs, we can exclude them from the startup group through the System Configuration Utility msconfig. Select the Run command on the Start menu, type "Msconfig" in the Run dialog box, enter the System Configuration Utility dialog box, and select the Startup tab, which lists the items and sources loaded at system startup, and carefully see if each item needs to be loaded automatically , or clear the current check box, the fewer items you load, the faster you start. It is recommended that, in addition to preserving input methods (Ctfmon in startup projects) and antivirus monitoring programs (such as Ravtask), everything else is forbidden to run automatically at startup.
