Many people may not be particularly familiar with WAN port and LAN port functions, but they are very important for wireless router connection. A wireless router that integrates Wired/wireless routers is currently the first choice in the home/office user group network. However, for many readers who are new to wireless routers, how can we quickly understand and play with wireless routers?

I. WAN port functions

All wireless routers have a 10/100 Mbps adaptive Ethernet interface, which is commonly known as the WANWideAreaNetwork, Wan) port. The main function of this interface is to connect to the upper layer ADSL/CableMODEM, Ethernet switches, and wireless routers through twisted pair wires to achieve Internet access. Currently, the WAN port of a wireless router supports the port auto-flip AutoMDI/MDIX function. Therefore, both straight-through and cross-twisted pair wires can be used to smoothly connect to the wireless router of upper-layer devices. Generally, the WAN port of a wireless router can support ADSL virtual dial-up PPPoE), dynamic IPdynamicipaddress, such as FTTX + LAN access, DSL + LAN access, etc.), static IPstaticipaddress, such as leased line access) and other broadband access methods. The WAN port of a powerful wireless router also supports Special L2TP, PPTP, 802.1x + Dynamic IP, 802.1x + static IP, and other Internet access methods.

To set the WAN port, enter the IP address of the wireless router in the address bar of the IE browser, and then enter the username and password in the login window, which is generally admin ), after entering, you can find the WAN port and other similar options. By default, the wireless router connection mode is set to dynamic IP. When the ISP Internet Service Provider supports Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol DHCP) or you use a dynamic IP address to connect to a wireless router, you can access the Internet without changing this setting. If your ISP assigns a permanent, fixed IP address to your computer, you need to select this option as "static IP ", enter the IP address, subnet mask, and gateway address provided by the ISP in the options.

If you use the ADSL virtual dial-up PPPoE to access the Internet, enter the user name and password you have obtained from the ISP under this option. In addition, in order to solve some problems that some web pages cannot be opened when DNS is not set for Internet access, the "manually set DNS server" option is usually included in the advanced settings of this setting, you can set it to the most stable DNS server address of the local ISP. In addition, some new wireless routers also support VPN virtual private networks, including L2TP, PPTP, and other wireless router connection methods), IEEE802.1x includes 802.1x + Dynamic IP and 802.1x + static IP) and other WAN Access methods, readers can also set as needed.

When configuring an L2TP or PPTP connection, in addition to entering the Internet account and password, you must also enter the dynamic IP address, static IP address, and Server IP/domain name provided by the ISP as needed. When using 802.1x + Dynamic IP and 802.1x + static IP to access the Internet, you must first enter the authentication username and password provided by the ISP to pass the authentication. After logon, if the IP address is a dynamic IP address, you only need to click the update button to automatically obtain the WAN port IP address and other information from the ISP Server. If the IP address is a static IP address, you also need to manually enter the IP address, subnet mask, gateway, DNS server, and other information.

Ii. How to Use the LAN port

Wireless routers generally provide Four 10/100 Mbps or Gbit/s adaptive Ethernet interfaces (commonly known as LAN ports) to facilitate internal wired LAN connections, these ports also support the common port auto-flip AutoMDI/MDIX function. In addition to using a wireless router to connect four computers with a wired network card to share or access the Internet, it can also be connected to the LAN ports of switches, broadband routers, and wireless routers from the LAN ports of the wireless router ). The WEB configuration page of the wireless router generally provides a large number of configuration functions for the LAN port, these functions include local IP Address Settings, subnet mask settings, DHCP server settings, Client IP address restriction settings, and packet MTU settings.

The local IP address is the gateway address of the wireless router, that is, the WEB configuration address. In general, the default IP address of the factory Wireless Router does not need to be changed, but there are exceptions. For example, to prevent intruders from guessing the address easily, you can change the address to an uncommon CIDR block, for example, from 192.168.1.1 to 192.168.111.254 by default. If the IP address of the same network segment conflicts with the ADSL/CableMODEM during wireless router connection, for example, both the MODEM and the router use 192.168.1.1 as the configuration address ), you also need to change the address to an uncommon CIDR block.
