Analysis on the degree of competition in the second-level direction for us Electronic Engineering (EE) Applications
Applications in different directions are extremely difficult. Among the 11 EE fields, communications should be the most difficult. As far as I know, half of who applied for Cornell this year are applying for communications. The Communications Group is only a small group of Cornell. So we can imagine how fierce the competition is. This is also related to the industry situation. This year, wireless communication's company cut jobs and lost money worldwide, and it won't have any money in hand, making the application more difficult.
1. Communication and network communications & Network
Admission difficulty analysis: the most popular direction of EE, with fierce competition. It is no exaggeration to say that about five of the 10 applicants apply for this direction. In addition to being competitive in GPA and G/T (t is higher than 580, G is higher than 1100, and GPA is higher than 3.0 can be said to be the basic admission hardware condition for top schools, related research background and strength are also required.
This direction is widely used in signal processing, computer, control, and optics. Applies to persons with the above background.
2. Signal Processing: image, video, audio & speech processing
Analysis of admission difficulty: the employment prospects are wide, because each branch in this direction has a strong applicability and can be applied in the manufacturing, aerospace, medical, and military fields. There are a lot of Chinese students who have obtained ad, and few Chinese students have obtained RA/Ta fellow. The main requirement is to have some basic practitioners and practical application experience, chinese students are less experienced in applying for this direction, so there are not many scholarship opportunities. Take the applicant's research and practical experience as an example. For example, a bachelor's degree last year, T: 627 + 5.0, G: 1290, GPA 3.4/4.0, in addition, there have been a lot of related research experience, and finally got an Auburn University (2006 US News overall ranking 86) PhD admission, showing the degree of competition.
3. Computer Engineering
Admission Difficulty Analysis: It is widely used in connection with Cs, and many students studying computers in China are competing to apply. This direction is more inclined to robotics, AI, cryptography and information security, there are few international students in these directions, so it is important to know whether the professor has recruited international students.
The above three aspects are relatively popular branches. In addition to the EE, they also include:
4. Electronics & Integrate Circuit
Admission Difficulty Analysis: it is possible that the main understanding is the main function of the system. Many Faculty in this direction in foreign countries is CS, so some also put this in CS. It should be said that simply going to IC design is only a very applied technology, rather than the work that the Institute should do. When going to graduate school or working in icdesign, this experience should be profound, or ASIC. In short, IC is full of engineering, the foundation is semiconductor and microelectronics. The basis is not broken through, and the above large-scale architecture can only be minor. He is mainly engaged in chip development and electronic product R & D, and has optimistic employment prospects. The electronic product production field represented by mobile phone manufacturers has a broad space for employment. The recruitment volume is large, but the source is average, so the competition is not very fierce.
5. System and Control Systems & controls
Admission difficulty analysis: the research is robust, the identification of the multi-variable system, and the research direction of the biased theory is relatively boring, and there are relatively few applicants. Competition is not intense.
6. Photons & Optics
Analysis of admission difficulty: There is a crossover with the physical direction. Many physical students are also competing to apply, and the competition is fierce. However, the pure optical research of physics mainly studies the basic properties of light. The optical research of Electronic Engineering mainly studies communication laser, the difference is still very large. The undergraduate and postgraduate courses are ideal for applications that integrate optical and optical fiber communication devices and the Department of Information and Electronic Engineering. It is important to have a professional background and mathematical skills. It has a solid mathematical foundation and is very important for disciplines and scientific research related to information science. Because the 21st century is the century of information technology, the processing, analysis and transmission of information cannot be separated from the application of mathematical methods and mathematical tools.
7. bioelectrical engineering
Admission Difficulty Analysis: Biology and life sciences are one of the most active disciplines in the 21st century. The study of biological life using electrical and electronic technology is a feature of the electrical discipline of the European and American universities, therefore, the applicant is required to have a certain background in biology and medicine at the same time. There are not many applicants who are relatively cool, but the prospects are very good.
8. electromagnetism Electromagnetics
Admission difficulty analysis: the research field involves other disciplines such as MSE and physics. Similar disciplines and directions include optics, optoelectronics, and semiconductor devices. In fact, electromagnetics and Optoelectronics are the same, because the frequency of microwave and light is different, so you can think about this. Many physics students apply. This is suitable for applications that integrate optical and optical fiber communication devices.
