Anatomy of seven major mistakes that Linux beginners especially like to make
GuideChanging the operating system is a major event for everyone-especially for many users who do not know what the operating system is. However, switching from Windows to Linux is particularly difficult. These two operating systems have different preconditions and priorities, as well as different processing methods. As a result, new Linux users are easy to confuse, because their experience on Windows is no longer applicable.

For example, there are seven Windows "refugees" who will make errors when they start using Linux (there is no sequence ):

7. Select the wrong Linux release

Linux has hundreds of different versions, or they are called release versions. Many of them are specific to different versions or users. With the wrong version selected, your first intimate experience with Linux will soon become a nightmare.

If you switch with the help of a friend, confirm that their suggestions are for you, not for them. There are a lot of articles that can help you. You only need to pay attention to the top 20 or columns in Distrowatch, and it is unlikely that you will make a mistake.

A better way is to try its Live DVD before you install a release. Live DVD runs the release version on peripherals, which allows you to test the version without making any changes to the hard disk. In fact, unless you know how to make the hard disk accessible in Linux, you will not see your hard disk.

6. expect everything to be the same

Due to limited experience, many Windows users do not know that the new operating system means new programs and new processing methods. In fact, your Windows program cannot run on Linux unless you use WINE or Windows virtual machine. And you cannot use MS Office or PhotoShop-you must learn to use LibreOffice and Krita. Over the years, these applications may have similar features on Windows, but their features may have different names and will be obtained from different menus or toolbar.

Even a lot of things are taken for granted differently. Windows users are particularly surprised to have multiple desktop environments-at least one primary and many secondary desktop environments.

5. Don't feel overwhelmed when installing software

On Windows, the new software is installed as a completely independent program. It usually includes other required dependent libraries.

Two software package services, Flatpak and Snap, are currently introducing similar installation systems on Linux, but they are too large for mobile devices and embedded devices. In more cases, Linux depends on the package management system. It determines whether the software dependency package is required based on the installed package, so as to provide other required dependency packages.

Package management on laptops and workstation is essentially equivalent to Google Play on a mobile phone or tablet: it is fast and does not require physical media for installation. In addition, it can save 20%-35% hard disk space because the dependency package will not be installed repeatedly.

4. the hypothetical software will be automatically updated

Linux users think that control is very important. Linux provides the Update service, but you need to run it manually by default. For example, most releases will let you know that there are available software updates, but you need to install these updates.

If you choose to update, you can even decide each update separately. For example, you may not want to update the new kernel because you have installed something that requires the current kernel. Or you want to install all the security updates, but do not want to update the release to a new version. You can choose everything.

3. forgot password

Many Windows users forget their passwords due to inconvenient logon. Or for convenience, a management account is often run.

These two methods are not easy on Linux. Many distributions use sudo to avoid root logon, especially for Ubuntu-based distributions. Most other distributions are installed to prohibit the root from running the graphic interface. However, if you successfully bypass these restrictions on Linux, note that most of your Linux security advantages will be ineffective (in fact, this is not recommended for Windows ).

By the way, do you see an automatic logon option on the installer? It is used in uncommon scenarios, such as virtual machines that do not contain privacy information.

2. Worry about no fragment and anti-virus software

Linux occasionally requires fragment, but only when the partition recovery or partition is almost full. In addition, as solid state disks become increasingly popular, fragmentation is becoming a thing of the past, although solid state disks do need to regularly run trim on any operating system.

Similarly, anti-virus software is a major problem only when files are often transmitted to Windows machines in Linux. There are few Linux viruses or malware, and the daily use of non-root users, the use of strong passwords, regular backup of the current file is enough to prevent the virus.

1. I think I have no software available

Software on Windows is charged, and most categories are exclusive to a company-for example, an Office set MS Office and a graphic and design Adobe. These conditions encourage users to stick to the same application, even if they are missing.

In Linux, the plot is different. Only a few high-end applications are charged, and almost each type of software has two or three alternatives. All of these available software can be downloaded in 10 minutes or less. If a substitute doesn't suit your taste, you can delete it and then install another one without any effort. In Linux, you almost always have a choice.

Transition Period

There may not be so many suggestions for Windows users to be fully prepared to switch to Linux. It is useless to say that new users should be open-minded, because their expectations are always so high that many users do not realize that they have such high expectations.

The best thing Linux beginners can do is to adjust their mindset and spend a little time adapting to them. It will take some time to complete the transition period. However, in the long run, your attempts will eventually return.
