Interests

Intracellular Signal transduction and Cell-cell communication

The advent of the New biology characterized by high throughput technologies and recombinant DNA Technologiesand novel Imag ING techniques has revolutionized we approach to doing. In particular, Systems biology isdeveloping by taking a integrated closed-loop approach, in which theory guides the the-E Xperiments is Performedand experiments help refine theory. Our labs are taking this approach by combining molecular biology, microfabricationand imaging techniques and combining them With the state of the art modeling studies to investigate what living cellscan sense their environment and how this sensing Ability can help them establish communication leading to complexensemble responses. We is studying, by modeling and experiment, MAPK, nf-? B, PKA and PI3K signaltransduction pathways in eukaryotes. These pathways has been implicated in all vital cellular functions, such as cellcycle, locomotion and apoptosis, and vari OUs pathologies, including cancer and AIDS. We are also studying THe wayssimple organisms can display complex behavior in formation of biofilms and other superstructures implicated in over 65% of bacterial infections. In addition, we is exploring novel mechanisms of Cell-cell communication involvingphysical transfer of cell membrane comp Onents between eukaryotic cells. Finally, we integrate the experimentallyvalidated models and relate them to gene network regulation and other cell respons Es.
