Application coexistence and migration

Microsoft has developed a classification method for Lotus Domino applications based on whether the application contains workflow or backend connectivity, and whether to use the default Domino template (. NTF file. These criteria determine whether Microsoft Domino data migration tools should be used to migrate applications, or other tools/functions are required, or preferably stored on the Domino platform. Shows how Microsoft classifies Lotus Notes/Domino applications based on whether applications are created based on standard Lotus Domino templates, and whether the application contains connections or workflows with other sources.

The following four criteria should be taken into account when classifying Domino applications:

• Data-centricApplications mainly focus on data collection and sharing. Such applications do not have workflows or connectivity with other applications or databases. Migrating these applications is relatively simple because they require that the data be migrated to an application on the Microsoft side with the corresponding fields and forms.
• Process-centricApplications that contain workflows or backend connections to other applications or databases. It is difficult to migrate these applications because the logic and process must be re-created to migrate these applications.
• Template-basedApplications created based on the default Lotus Domino template installed on the Domino server during Server installation.
• CustomApplications created based on the template but modified to include additional fields or applications created using the blank template.

Template-based applications

When you use a standard Domino template to create an application and do not modify it, it is easier to estimate the application field, field type, and application usage, and map this information to Microsoft Collaboration products. Any application created using the standard Domino template without modification is the basic choice for migration.

Lotus Domino comes with many default templates. Some of these templates are used to manage the Domino server and Domino infrastructure. Databases created using these templates do not need to be migrated.

The following table lists the templates attached to Lotus Domino R5 and R6.

• Application Based on "discussion template"

Solution:

• Use Microsoft Application Migrator 2006 for Lotus Domino to migrate data to the associated Windows SharePoint Services template.

Solution:

• Use Microsoft Application Migrator 2006 for Lotus Domino to migrate data to the associated Windows SharePoint Services template. If you need the workflow function, integrate the third-party workflow solution or Windows workflow.

Custom Application

Use Microsoft Application Migrator 2006 for Lotus Domino, or consider using third-party tools to migrate applications:

• It is not any application created using the default Lotus Domino template.
• Any application created using the template but modified to include additional fields or data to be migrated.

In addition, functions such as Web Services can be used to integrate data between Lotus Domino and Windows SharePoint Services.

Example:

• Applications that are based on the default Lotus Domino Template but contain additional fields or data to be migrated.
• It is not a data-centric custom application created using the default Lotus Domino template, such as client information.

Solution:

• Use Microsoft Application Migrator 2006 for Lotus Domino or a third-party tool to migrate data, or use Lotus Notes/Domino and. net integration Page and GotDotNet: The Microsoft.. NET Framework Community (English.
• Use Microsoft products to create applications that provide similar logic and functions.
• Work with Microsoft partners to create Microsoft applications that provide additional logic and functionality.

• Use Microsoft Application Migrator 2006 for Lotus Domino or a third-party tool to migrate data, or use Lotus Notes/Domino and. net integration Page and GotDotNet: The Microsoft.. NET Framework Community (English.
• Use Microsoft products to create applications that provide similar logic and functions.
• Work with Microsoft partners to create Microsoft applications that provide additional logic and functionality.

Windows SharePoint Services Template

Microsoft has developed many templates that can be used with Windows SharePoint Services. These templates are useful when you migrate the Domino database to Windows SharePoint Services and create a SharePoint Portal Server site.
