Alcatel-Lucent said on Tuesday that the first regional WiMax network will appear in Russia, and Alcatel-Lucent will provide WiMax equipment for it.
Synterra, a Russian telecommunications service provider, chose Alcatel-Lucent to build a WiMax mobile communication infrastructure network covering some towns with an average population of 0.1 million.
This elementary WiMax regional network is expected to start operation in the fourth quarter of this year. Synterra has said it intends to work with other telecom service providers to cover more than 1,000 Russian towns by the end of next year. Synterra plans to provide nationwide services with a complete system.
According to the 802.16e WiMax mobile communication standard, WiMax mobile communication is similar to micro-cellular network communication, allows people to access the Internet using mobile devices in the park or by using public transport. Moreover, WiMax mobile communication can ensure faster data transmission speed and wider coverage than the cellular network.
The entire set of devices includes base stations, wireless access controllers, and routine network management software. Even though 70 other WiMax test networks or networks are being built around the world, Alcatel-Lucent declined to share the devices that have been provided to them, but the company also said, network coverage is planned in some of Russia's largest cities, including Moscow and St. Petersburg.
Residents in the WiMax mobile communication network coverage area can enjoy services such as IP voice, mobile data, video stream, and virtual private network access.
Another device manufacturer, Aperto Networks, also began building a WiMax test network in Russia last year, using the company's PacketMax series products, these include base stations for service providers and user resident devices placed in users' homes or offices. However, this device is based on the 802.16d WiMax fixed network communication standard and requires users to place their laptops closer to the wireless router.
According to a spokesman for Alcatel-Lucent, the networks being deployed are inseparable from the business models of various technologies and service providers.
