Please close your eyes and think back to the structural diagram of ArcGIS Server. If there is paper around you, you can try to draw the structural diagram and return to the first blog post for comparison, and then rate yourself to see how much you can get?
Note that the full score is 50 points. The score is set to 50 points. Drawing a graph is a part. If you can say that the role of each component in the structural diagram is another part, in the first blog, the Web Adaptor has not been introduced yet. Since it has not been introduced, it indicates that the structure of our website is incomplete. In fact, in the blog post about the architecture, we intentionally stayed here, in the second part, this is not used during standalone installation. We can prove that this is an optional component, at least when I use standalone as the test environment, however, the real environment is not as simple as we think?

The GIS server has a built-in Web server. What should I do if I want to use my own internal server?
How to implement multiple GIS server clusters?
......
If you have any questions, it means that we are thinking. This is what we hope to see. Only by constantly thinking and constantly asking ourselves why can we fully understand one thing, now let's start our text.
What is ArcGIS Web Adaptor?
ArcGIS Server 10.1 is embedded with a Web Server. We certainly want to let ArcGIS Server work with our own Web Server. If so, we need another component, ArcGIS Web Adaptor, this component allows you to integrate ArcGIS Server with our Web Server. Web Adaptor is compatible with IIS and Java EE servers (Websphere, JBoss, WebLogic ).
Web Adaptor is an application running on our Web site. It forwards requests to the GIS server, it will track the ArcGIS Server site to learn which GIS servers are removed or new GIS servers are added, and it will forward requests to the currently participating GIS servers.
When we want to expose the ArcGIS Server site to external users or implement load balancing and security technologies, or maintain a static URL for our ArcGIS Server site, we should install Web Adaptor.
Note that WebAdaptor and Web server must be installed on the same server.
Web adaptors provide us with those benefits
Allows ArcGIS Server to be integrated with our own Web servers. By adding a Web Server to the site, you can obtain the capability to host Web applications. These web programs can use their own GIS services.
Allows exposure of GIS servers through standard structured websites and ports
Distribute requests to GIS servers of different ArcGIS servers to provide load balancing at the web layer.
This prevents external users from accessing the ArcGIS Server site directory and ArcGIS Server Manager.
If we use IIS, we can use Windows integrated authentication to restrict users entering our site at the web layer.
Web Adaptor Installation
The WebAdaptor component is installed on the ArcGIS Server installation disk. It is easy to install. You only need to click "Setup" and then click "Next" (to install it with the Web Server, here I use IIS as the server). After installation, we will see our installed WebAdaptor on the IIS server, such:
After the installation, We need to associate the Web Adaptor with our Server, that is, to register the Server site with the Web Adaptor, we only need to open the Web Adaptor in the browser, you can see a configuration page, such:
In this way, you only need to expose the Web Adaptor address to the user. Our introduction to Web Adaptor is now complete.
Summary: Web Adaptor is actually an optional component. It appears to allow our site to provide a unified URL address externally, in addition, the GIS server can be integrated with the enterprise's internal Web servers. In terms of security, the security mechanism of web servers can be used to ensure the security of our GIS servers ......
