ARM announces the launch of the latest 32-bit cortex-m processor CORTEX-M7, which delivers up to twice times more computing and digital signal processing than the currently highest-performing ARM architecture microcontroller (MCU) ( DSP) performance. The ARM cortex-m7 processor is designed for high-end embedded applications for next-generation automotive electronics, networking equipment, and smart home and industrial applications. The first vendors to gain access to arm CORTEX-M7 processors include Atmel, Freescale and STMicroelectronics.

Noel Hurley, general manager of ARM processors, said: "After the new CORTEX-M7 arm cortex-m processor family, arm and partners will be able to provide the most scalable and highest software compatibility solution for the connected world." With the diversity of CORTEX-M7 and new memory capabilities, developers can design a more powerful, smarter, and more reliable microcontroller for each type of embedded application. ”

With a performance test of up to 5 COREMARK/MHZ1, the performance of the CORTEX-M7 enables CORTEX-M7 to simultaneously deliver high performance and digital signal control capabilities, helping microcontroller manufacturers keep their research and development costs to a minimum while delivering high performance-demanding embedded applications. The CORTEX-M7 will be used in intelligent control systems for motor control, industrial automation, advanced voice functions, image processing, various types of connected vehicle applications, and Internet of Things (IoT)-related applications.

CORTEX-M7 can handle audio, image data and speech recognition more quickly, and users can immediately feel the benefits of this processor. As with the existing CORTEX-M series, CORTEX-M7 also provides a program model for the C language and is compatible with the existing cortex-m family of products in binary. With complete ecosystem and software compatibility, the existing cortex-m core can be easily migrated to CORTEX-M7. As a result, system designers can reuse various program codes to reduce development and maintenance related costs.

In 2013, ARM partners shipped 3 billion microcontrollers based on ARM architecture to become the industry leader.

ARM CORTEX-M7 Product Features:

? 6-level Superscalar pipeline, in the 40LP process and the frequency of 400MHz, the performance test can reach 2,000 coremarks.

? Supports 64-bit AXI interconnect with optimized instruction and data cache for more efficient access to large external memory and connected high-performance peripherals.

? Tightly coupled memory interface provides fast, real-time response.

? A wide range of configurable options to lock down different cost and performance points.

? The embedded Tracking Macro unit (Embedded trace Macrocell, ETM) can be equipped with complete instructions and data tracks to improve system visibility.

? The optional safety kit and built-in error detection capabilities help achieve the automotive safety level of the Asil D and SIL 3 standards, which means CORTEX-M7 is the best choice for safety-sensitive markets such as automotive electronics, industrial applications, transportation and medical applications.

? Partners on the ARM Connected community offer the broadest range of third-party tools, real-time operating systems (RTOS), and middleware that supports all architectures.

Partner Testimonials:

Reza Kazerounian, senior vice president and general manager of microcontroller division at Atmel, said: "Cortex-m7 's product positioning is subtly between the Atmel Cortex-m series based microcontrollers and the CORTEX-A series-based microprocessor (MPU), Helps Atmel's processor solutions expand coverage. Customers of the Cortex-m family of microcontrollers will be able to effectively improve performance and system functionality while maintaining the ease of use of the Cortex-m family and maximizing software reuse. In addition to the rapidly growing internet of things and wearable devices, ARM's CORTEX-M7 processors meet the performance and power requirements of industrial applications and automotive electronics. ”

"Freescale's CORTEX-M7-based solution dramatically expands the performance of microcontrollers and creates new market opportunities for us," said Geoff Lees, senior vice president and general manager of microcontroller division at Freescale. Our solutions deliver significant innovation and system-level performance improvements in motor control, industrial automation, and energy conversion. These markets are growing rapidly and high-performance cortex-m7 reduce the need for additional digital signal processors and microcontrollers. ”

"Providing our customers with smarter, more powerful STM32 microcontrollers is one of STMicroelectronics ' main mission, and in this regard, CORTEX-M7 's performance is stunning," said Daniel Colonna, marketing director at STMicroelectronics. The CORTEX-M7 core enables our existing 500 remaining STM32 microcontroller performance to scale up and be seamlessly compatible, enabling developers to immediately use the next generation STM32 microcontrollers based on the existing relevant tools and software ecosystem with CORTEX-M7 as the core. ”
