ATM and Gigabit Ethernet switches directly affect network performance

GE Ethernet switches are one of the most widely used switches in enterprises. Here we mainly analyze how GE Ethernet switches and ATM affect network performance. The selection of the main networking technology directly affects the network system performance and future expansion and upgrade. The selection should be fully demonstrated and carefully conducted. In the previous years of network construction, many organizations have chosen ATM as the backbone technology for networking.

The Gigabit Ethernet switch is a technology developed in recent years. Compared with fast Ethernet, it provides higher and faster transmission speeds and better layer-3 switching capabilities, it can manage higher bandwidth and traffic. Its technology is simpler than ATM and its price is reasonable. The corresponding Gigabit Ethernet standards have been introduced, so Gigabit Ethernet is now the main direction of LAN development. Many organizations choose Gigabit Ethernet as the backbone technology for network expansion and upgrade. However, in order to protect investment and make effective use of the original network equipment, the connection between the ATM and Gigabit Ethernet networking technologies is involved, this article introduces the solution to this problem based on our practical experience.

During the Phase I project construction of our campus network, the backbone uses the ATM technology and installs a certain number of network devices. The backbone switch uses the 3COM Corebilder 7000HD, which currently works normally. In the phase II project construction, the backbone adopts the Gigabit Ethernet technology. To protect the investment in the first phase of the campus network project, the original convergence between the ATM and Gigabit Ethernet adopts the following methods:

1. The Gigabit Ethernet switch is Cisco's catalyst 6509, which is the most suitable for a certain scale of campus network as the backbone Gigabit Ethernet switch, but currently it can only be configured with a 622M interface module, to provide the 622M interface on Corebilder 700HD, You need to purchase a new one. Use one end of the two as LES, and the other end as LEC, so that the information points of the two systems are in the same subnet, connect the two networking technologies.

2. A Cisco Gigabit Ethernet switch that supports the 155M interface can be used as a Catalyst 8540. Because port 8540 has a low density, for example, the Gigabit module only has two ports, the cost is high. It is configured according to our system requirements, $6509 ).

3. An alternative approach is to sacrifice the convenience of management, so that the ATM and Ethernet networks of different systems are located in different subnets. The two systems are connected through a Cisco Catalyst 2824M configured with a Gigabit Ethernet module and a 155 m atm Optical Fiber Module) so that the two systems are parallel.

Ethernet user data is exchanged through the Catalyst 6509 switch, and data exchange with ATM users is performed through the LAN simulation of corebuilder 7000HD. Ethernet data is translated into ATM cells in the form of LANE, and reaches the destination site through the ATM network. The destination site also reaches the destination site through the ATM network. The destination site is also translated into Ethernet data through ATM-Fame. Of course, LANE services must be provided by Corebuilder 7000HD. Corebuilder 7000HD should provide LES/LECS/LEC/BUS and so on.

The above three schemes can be used. Which one can be selected based on requirements and funding conditions. Because the cost of the third solution is low and can meet the needs, we have adopted it. Considering that mutual access between gigabit Ethernet and ATM networks requires multiple conversions, the performance of mutual access between information points between the Ethernet subnet and the ATM subnet will be affected, therefore, the original Gigabit Ethernet switch should be properly concentrated in several construction materials, considering that the transmission distance of the ATM network is longer than that of the Gigabit Ethernet, therefore, the Gigabit Ethernet switch is concentrated in the Construction objects with a long distance from the network center, a small number of information points, and a small amount of access.
