Technorati label: Be, Backup Exec, Veritas, backup 1 glossary
Media: the device used to back up data, such as a tape library or disk folder, is equivalent to a file.
Media set: manage all media in a folder.
Media Server: The machine on which the be is installed.
Inventory: You must check the imported media before using it. Check all the tapes to make sure they are usable.
Catalog: You must catalog the imported media before using it. Manually add tags to each tape to differentiate the purpose of each tape. If the tape has been attached with barcode, you do not need to do it again. All new tapes with labels are stored in the Temporary Media set.
Label media: Creates a new name for the media.
Erase media: investigate and handle all data on the media. The cleared data is stored in the Temporary Media set.
Additional period and coverage period: all media in the media set. The additional period is counted from the first write time point on a single media, and the coverage period is counted from the last write time point of a single media.
For example, if there are two tapes A1 and A2 in media set a, the additional period of the media set is two days, and the coverage period is three days, when data is written to A1 at 9:00:00 on the first day, the additional cycle is calculated from 9:00:00 until 48 hours at 9:00:00 on the first day.
There are two cases of A1 after 48 hours in 2 days:
First, there is still room for A1 to finish writing. What happens if data needs to be written again at on the first day? Because the additional period is two days, you cannot write data to A1. The coverage protection period is three days. At this time, A1 is still in the coverage protection status. Therefore, if data is written again, A2 is required (whether A2 can be overwritten is not considered here, if yes ).
At this time, the additional period of A1 is reached, and the protection period is covered.
At this time, the additional cycle of A2 is re-computed, and the calculation is another two days. The coverage protection cycle is not started until A2 is last written.
Second, A1 has been written in the previous two days and has not been backed up yet. Therefore, be uses A2 to continue to back up the remaining data.
At this time, the additional cycle of A1 when the tape is fully filled is not reached, and the coverage protection cycle starts timing from the moment when the tape is fully filled.
At this time, the additional cycle of A2 is re-computed, and it is another two days, instead of the additional time of A1. The coverage protection period does not start to be calculated until A2 is finished.
The Symantec Storage Technology Forum provides the following description:
You have several 40 Gb tapes.
Full backup is performed at every Friday evening. It takes about 30 GB of data to be backed up within one hour. Incremental backup is performed from Monday to Thursday evening. It takes about 5 GB of data to be backed up within 10 minutes. The full backup tape is retained for one month, and the Incremental Backup Tape is retained for only one week.
According to the above requirements, we can create two media sets, assuming that one is full and the other is incremental.
At the beginning, all the new tapes that have been labeled are stored in the Temporary Media set.
During the first full backup, the backup job specifies that the target media set is full, but there is no media in full. In this case, be will select a tape from the Temporary Media to instruct the tape drive to write data to the tape, after writing, the available space is about 10 Gb, so we can consider using a new tape for the next full backup. Because no additional writes are required for the tape after a write operation, we can set the additional cycle of the media set full to 0. Another new tape will be used when the second full backup starts at next week, according to the requirements, the original written tapes should be retained for one month, that is, they should not be overwritten within one month, we can set the full coverage protection period of the media set to 4 weeks, so that the tape written in 5th weeks can be overwritten at 1st weeks, 6th weeks can overwrite the tapes written at 2nd weeks ..... Four tapes can be recycled in sequence.
During the first Incremental backup, the backup job specifies that the target media set is incremental, but there is no media in incremental. In this case, be selects a tape from the Temporary Media to indicate that the tape drive writes data to the tape, after writing, the available space is about 35 GB, so we can consider using this disk for the next three incremental backups. We can set the additional cycle of the media set incremental to four days. When a new Incremental Backup starts next week, this tape can be reused, therefore, we can set the coverage protection cycle to three days (why is it three days, please note that the coverage protection cycle is counted from the last time data is written, the last write time is Thursday night, and the tape on Sunday night exceeds the coverage protection period. It can be used on Monday night ).
There is also a concept of media coverage level related to this part. Generally, the default part (partial) level is enough.
I did not understand the full backup coverage protection period at that time. In this case, a tape is used for each full backup. If one full backup is not enough, use two tapes.
Assume that the write sequence of the two-in-one tapes for full backup in the first week is tape1 and tape2, so is it tape1 or tape2 first overwritten in the second week?
800 Customer Service's answer is: When tape1 is full and cannot be appended, the coverage protection period of tape1 starts from the last write time point. The coverage protection period of tape2 is calculated as normal. Therefore, the coverage protection period of tape1 is earlier than that of tape1.
At the same time, 800 defines the additional cycle: When a box of tape is overwritten, the additional cycle of the tape is re-computed. Assume that there is a media set ms01, and the additional cycle is three days. When the data for the first day is full, Take 3rd tape from the Temporary Media set, write the remaining data to 2nd tape. At this time, the 2nd tape can continue to write data on the 4, 5, and 6 days.
Media set search sequence: when a job requires a new tape, the job can select how to search for the media according to your settings. Media can be stored in a media set, either in the current media set or in another media set. Refer to "set the search sequence for covering media" in the help document.
