Compared with the scenery three years ago, the Linux desktop version of the operating system is now on the surface more silent. But in fact, Linux based desktop operating system development work has been ongoing: The major desktop Liunx desktop software upgraded to the latest 2.6 kernel; Sun recently launched the Sun JAVA Desktop System 2003 (China Computer Education daily) 2004 9th "System Garden" version has introduced), Opendesktop.net developed Chinese opendesktop operating system ... These Linux operating systems not only make their own features on the basis of open source, but also have a great improvement in usability and practicality. In this article, we will introduce China-made Chinese operating system opendesktop, conditional users may wish to download it from http://www.opendesktop.net/modules/download/free of its mirror files (size 679.23MB) and a variety of drivers, input method.
Quick and easy installation process
The OpenDesktop installation process is simple: Burn the downloaded ISO image files to the disc, and of course you have to have a whole new hard disk partition (free space at least 3GB, recommended capacity is 5GB), and then use this CD to boot the system. We will first see the Welcome interface, in the next interface, click the Next button to start the installation, the installation does not need to configure the network environment, only to detect the keyboard, mouse, video card, you almost do not need manual intervention, the entire installation process will take about 20 minutes.
Hint: We can also copy the installation files to the hard drive for installation. First extract the \dosutils\autoboot folder into any folder on your hard disk, Then from the Redhat or Fedora installation CD to find a Loadlin.exe file copy the past, such as the Red Flag 4.0 installation CD, you can download the file from the Internet, and finally into pure DOS mode, type the following command: Loadlin vmlinuz Initrd=initrd.img
The beautiful desktop
Start OpenDesktop, you will first see the black character interface, and then a very beautiful landscape of Guilin, next to enter the username and password, the login interface and Windows XP very similar (Figure 1). The default username is root, no password, direct return can be. The first logon process is a bit long, however, as long as the IP address after the login set to a fixed value, the starting speed will be greatly accelerated!

Oh, now we finally see the table as shown in Figure 2, the author at first almost thought it was longhorn pasture grass! OpenDesktop the KDE graphics environment to the GNOME graphics environment and looks gorgeous. Particularly noteworthy is the desktop on the right side of the toolbar, its function is very similar to the slide of Longhorn, provides the clock, weather forecast (the default setting is Beijing, in the case of connecting to the Internet every 30 minutes automatically updated, currently available to select only some large and medium-sized cities), Resource consumption (CPU, memory, network and other resource usage), search bar (type keywords, you can quickly jump to the appropriate page) and the Media play bar (insert music CD, you do not have to open the media playback software, directly press the button here can be controlled).

System components and Configuration
1. Office components
The Office software built into the system is OpenOffice.org 1.1.0, whose interface is similar to the familiar Microsoft Office (Figure 3). There is an automatic file attendant under the File menu that contains components such as letters, faxes, meeting agendas, memos, presentations, Web pages, forms, and so on, with a single program that can handle documents in multiple formats. In addition, users can also choose "Output as PDF" under the "File" menu to create PDF documents directly, which is a task that Word cannot accomplish.

2. Web browsing and configuration
The system uses the Epiphany browser based on the Mozilla Gnome interface, the default home page is set to http://www.google.com, and the Google Toolbar is automatically integrated. The Favorites menu is built with folders such as entertainment, work, news, travel, and so on, whether it's an interface or a way to use it, very similar to the familiar ie. Click edit → options → privacy and security, you can do Web content, Cookies, temporary files, and other settings, which allow pop-up window settings, but Windows XP SP2 new features Oh!
Double-click the root Home directory icon on the desktop to open Explorer, the left pane is the file tree, locate the network configuration from Control Panel, and then double-click to open the Network Configuration window (Figure 4). Here we can set the IP address, subnet mask, default gateway address, DNS server address, and so on. You can enable the firewall in network security, and set whether to use the services such as www (HTTP), FTP, Telnet, Mail (SMTP), and so on.

3. Send and Receive mail
The mail client uses a Thunderbird messaging system that requires an account to be created for the first time, followed by the use of Outlook Express or Outlook.
4. Input Method setting
OpenDesktop uses a new intelligent general-purpose input method platform SCIM, closely integrated with the GNOME graphics environment, much more performance than the Chinput Input method platform used in other Linux versions. The system built in a common input method provides natural code, Microsoft Pinyin, Violet, intelligent ABC and other input methods, support GBK coding, custom phrases and coding, the use of quite convenient. We can also install the Wubi font: to http://www.turbolinux.com.cn/~suzhe/scim/download Scim-tables-zh package for installation, the first ccinput deleted, The 9.0 version of SCIM is then installed, and the command format is as follows:
Rpm-e ccinput0.3.0-2
RPM-UVH scim-0.9.0-1.i586.rpm
Ctrl+alt+backspace
Alternatively, you can download the famous Penguin Input method from www.fcitx.org/download/fcitx-2.0.1-1.linuxsir.noarch.rpm, and here's a little more talk.
