Behavior differences between sgpio functions in different raid cards and HbA cards

Sgpio is a technology provided by SAS raid cards and SAS HbA cards for hard disk status indication. Its signal lines are contained in minisas sockets and cables, with this technology, you can easily observe the working status of the hard disk (such as activity, failure, and reconstruction ).

When designing and debugging a hard disk hot swapping backboard with sgpio function, it is found that sgpio on different SAS raid cards and SAS HbA cards do not fully comply with sgpio specifications, even for products of the same manufacturer, different models have different performance behaviors. The following lists the differences between several commonly used raid cards and the sgpio of HbA cards. :

1. megaraid sas8708elp (3G)

Card parameters:

Firmware ver 1.40, 232,1007 11.01-0036

Webbios ver 2.2-21-rel

Test:

A). The locate, faile, and rebuild LEDs work normally and comply with sgpio specifications.

B) activtyled does not flash, and activty bit does not have signal output.

C) The sdin slot signal RAID card provided on the backboard can receive and recognize the signal.

Conclusion: The sgpio of megaraidsas8708elp RAID card has the location and faile signal output, but no activity signal output.

2. Use SAS9211-8i card (6g)

Card parameters: BIOS 7.25.00.00 nvdata 0d. 44.00.05

BiOS 7.33.00.00

Test:

A). Through debugging, it is found that the sdout signal output by sgpio of the SAS9211-8i card is opposite to the standard signal.

The sdout signal output sequence in the fan is driver0, 1, 2, 3, and the signal output sequence of the SAS9211-8i card is

Driver3, 2, 1, 0.

B) During rebuild, sdout has no fail signal output ,.

C). The sdin (slot) signal SAS9211-8iHBA card issued on the backboard can receive and recognize.

Conclusion: sgpio of SAS9211-8iSAS card has activity, locate, faile signal output, but the output signal order is opposite to standard signal. There is no fail signal output during rebuild, And the sdin input function is not implemented.

3. Use SAS9311-8i card (12g)

Card parameter: MPT firmware Rev: 3.00.00.00-IR

Test:

A). sdout complies with the specifications. Activity, locate, faile, and rebuild LEDs work normally.

B) The sdin (slot) signal sent from the backboard cannot be identified by the memory card.

Conclusion: sgpio of SAS9311-8i SAS card has activity, locate, faile signal output, but does not realize sdin input function.

4. Use SAS9261-8i card (6g)

Card parameters:

Test:

A) after testing sdout, it is found that the corresponding activity signal is high, indicating that the hard disk is not active, and the standard high level indicates that the hard disk is active.

B). During the loacte operation, the RAID card sends a fail flash signal to sgpio. When the pre-pare removal operation is performed, the RAID card emits a locate flash signal.

C ). configure the two disks as RAID 1. After a hard disk is pulled out, the failled will be lit up. After a new hard disk is inserted, the RAID card will not be automatically rebuilt. At this time, the failled will remain on. After manual rebuild, only activity led flashes, failled does not light up.

Conclusion: The sgpio of SAS9261-8iSAS card has activity, locate, faile signal output, but the activity signal level expression meaning is different from the standard, and the SAS9211-8i card is the same as the rebuild, there is no fail signal output. The card does not implement the sdin input function.

Therefore, the software used on the backplane should be determined based on the raid and SAS card used by the user.
