This article takes the common VPC (Virtual PC 5.1) and VMware (VMware-workstation-4.0.0-4460) as an example to talk about the installation of RedHat Linux8.0 and 9.0 in Virtual PC.

I. VPC installation and debugging

Compared with VMware, VPC is much smaller, but its functions are not inferior. It is very easy to install a VPC. Double-click its installation program and click Next to install it successfully. After the installation is complete, a wizard will appear asking you to install the first virtual PC. You can use this wizard to create your first virtual machine! For example, enter linux8.0 in the computer name and click "Next". This will allow you to select the operating system to be installed and automatically identify the operating system to be installed as linux, click Next, select create a new hard disk (only a file is created here), specify its path to a partition with a large amount of space above your computer, and click Next, select how much memory it uses (if you want to install the Linux GUI in the future, we recommend that you set the memory to at least 128 MB), and then a new PC will be created successfully, isn't it easy? Now you can start your system!

2. Install Red Hat 8.0 in a vpc

Of course, you just clicked "Start System" and won't really start the system, because your system has not been installed yet! Next, let's install Linux step by step! Installing Red Hat 8.0 in a VPC is relatively simple. By default, the VPC is guided by a cd on some computers (if not, press the F2 key on the startup interface to enter BIOS settings, select boot, and adjust the cd-rom to floppy ), insert the first disk of your Linux 8.0 instance, and then boot it. After the boot interface appears, you can press the Enter key to enter the graphical installation interface. On the first screen, you can select Simplified Chinese to your desired language, then proceed step by step according to the wizard. This process is simple, but there is one thing we need to note: the VPC can only virtualize the S3 video card. Do not change the video card in the last configuration screen, in addition, it may not recognize the monitor, and you can use the default two screens. Click Next. Don't worry. If it is incorrect, it will let you reconfigure it when you restart. Then you can start Red Hat Linux 8.0. If you select a graphical logon interface, you can see a beautiful interface that allows you to enter the user name and password. If the screen blinks a few times without a graphical interface and a warning is displayed, it indicates that your graphics card and display are incorrectly configured, it will allow you to reconfigure. Set the video card to S3 and the resolution to 800*600. Use "Unknow" for the display !, Everything is bright again.

2. Install Red Hat 9.0 in a vpc

Installing Red Hat 9.0 in a VPC may not be as smooth as installing 8.0, but it may be very smooth if you have read this article. You need to pay attention to the video card: you also need to configure the video card as S3 and set the resolution to 800*600, in 9.0, its driver may think that S3 supports 24-bit color. In fact, it only supports 16-bit color. To change this setting, the display can also use the default one. Here, you 'd better set the logon interface to text logon.

If the above steps are not correctly set, a screen with a wide screen appears at startup, and the above is just a screen. Don't panic. Let me explain the solution below. Restart your VM first. After grub appears, press "e" on the system you have installed, and then the grub configuration file appears, move the mouse to the second line ......", Then press "e" and add a space single or "/init 1" at the end of the line. Then press "B" to restart and enter "single user mode ". After entering, enter vi/etc/X11/XF86Config at the prompt (if you cannot remember so much, you can press the tab key, the system will automatically add the following letters to you), then open the file, enter "/screen", and then the program will find the configuration for it. Then you press the "I" key to enter the insert mode, change the 24 here to 16, press the ESC key, press Shift +:, enter wq and press enter to exit. Enter init 6 and restart. Is your graphic interface coming out again!
