When the Bluetooth Technology Alliance officially announced the adoption of the Bluetooth Core Specification Version 4.0, it included the iconic Bluetooth Smart (Low Power) feature. The last step in the adoption process opens the door for all Bluetooth product types to be eligible for upgrade to 4.0 or higher.

Features of Bluetooth Smart (Low Power) wireless technology:

  • Ultra-low peak, average and idle power consumption
  • Able to run on standard button battery for several years
  • Low Cost
  • Multi-vendor interoperability
  • Enhanced scope

Bluetooth Smart (Low Power) technology allows devices like watches, toothbrushes, and toys to use Bluetooth wireless technology. It also provides developers with the ability to integrate new features into Bluetooth-enabled devices, such as sports and fitness, healthcare, human-computer interfaces (HID), and entertainment devices. For example, sensors in the pedometer and blood glucose monitor will only run low-power technologies. These single-mode devices benefit from the power savings and low costs provided by the 4.0 edition. Watches make full use of low-energy technology when collecting fitness sensors from wearing, while sending information to personal computers, or when wireless connection to a smart phone displays caller ID information, use Traditional bluetooth technology. Smartphones and PCs support the widest range of use cases, while encapsulating the classic Bluetooth dual mode to run both low power consumption and high-speed versions of this technology.

Generic attribute Profile

The latest Bluetooth specification uses a property-based protocol (ATT)-based service architecture. All low-power communication occurs in the general attribute profile (GATT ). One application or other profile uses GATT, so that the client and server can interact in a structured manner.

The server contains some attributes, while the GATT profile defines how to use attributes to discover, read, write, and obtain instructions. These functions support a service-based architecture. The service is defined in the profile specification. GATT allows you to expose the services and features defined in the profile specification.

The GATT profile is also the core part, which is defined in the Core Specification.

Profile

The first specification of Bluetooth Low-power wireless technology includes two profiles to optimize a specific set of products: Remote display profile and sensor profile.

Use GATT-based Bluetooth profile and service

The GATT architecture can easily create and implement a new profile. Many new profiles are under development, so the profile continues to grow. The convenience of profile implementation will contribute to the rapid growth of applications and the rapid growth of embedded devices supporting these applications.

Link Layer Technical Specifications

The link layer provides low-power idle mode operations and advanced power consumption and encryption functions for simple discovery and reliable point-to-point data transmission.

Single Mode and Dual Mode
Bluetooth Smart (low energy consumption) wireless technology includes two equally important implementation options: single mode and dual mode. Small devices such as watches and motion sensors use single-mode Bluetooth Smart (Low Energy) implementations. Dual-mode implementation shares a physical radio and antenna using a part of the Bluetooth hardware.

When connected to a single-mode Bluetooth Smart (low-power) device (without the classic bluetooth wireless technology), the device has the advantage of low power consumption. However, these details are not obvious to end users-whether the device uses the classic bluetooth wireless technology when using a single-mode or dual-mode device, or Bluetooth Smart (low power consumption), end users will not notice.
