802.16 & WiMAX

IEEE 802.16 standard, also known as IEEE Wireless MAN air interface standard, is mainly used in the range of Wireless MAN. Currently, the published and ongoing standards include 802.16, 802.16a, 802.16c, 802.16d, 802.16e, 802.16f, and 802.16g. Among them, 802.16, 16a, and 16d belong to the air interface standard for fixed wireless access, while 802.16e belongs to the air standard for mobile broadband wireless access. 802.16d (802.16-2004) is a revision of fixed wireless access. It can provide a rate of 15 Mbit/s over 5 Mbps channels. 802.16e is a standard based on 802.16d and is an enhancement and supplement to 16d. 802.16f defines the MAC layer and Physical Layer Management Information Library MIB of the 802.16 Fixed Wireless Access System) and related management processes. 802.16g defines 802.16 management processes and interfaces to enable 802.16 device interoperability and effective management of network resources, mobility and spectrum.

802.16d and 16e only define the physical layer, MAC layer, and aggregation layer in the air interface, and do not involve upper-layer networks and applications. To promote industrial development, WIMAX is currently working on network structure standards and business application requirements. In addition to the MAC layer physical layer, other standards related to 802.16 are mainly used for WIMAX. 802.11 is the creator of technical standards, and WIMAX is the promoter of technology and industrial chain. The relationship between them is similar to that between WiFi and. With the development of 802.16 standardization, WIMAX is also gradually promoting consistency testing.

802.16 supports 10 ~ 66GHz line-of-sight propagation frequency band and non-line-of-sight propagation frequency band below 11 GHz. Compared with other mobile communication systems, the 802.16 system has a high spectrum utilization and transmission rate, so it is suitable for providing broadband Internet access and mobile video services. Compared with other wired access methods such as xDSL, Cable, and optical fiber access, 802.16 Broadband Wireless Access has the advantages of faster deployment, higher scalability, and higher flexibility. For areas with low population density and ease of xDSL deployment, 802.16 can be used to provide the "wireless DSL" service for household and small business applications. In medium-sized enterprise buildings, 802.16 can support high-speed connection instead of optical fiber access.
