640 a NetBIOS-related error occurred.

The modem cannot negotiate the connection at a set speed, set the modem's initial speed to a lower value, and then redial. You can also try disabling modem compression and software compression. If you are not yet able to establish a connection, try adding the ipx/spx, NetBIOS protocol to the connection.

641 The server cannot allocate the NetBIOS resources required to support the client.

Ask your system administrator to increase the resource capacity of the remote access server or to stop some unimportant services, such as Messenger service, network DDE.

642 a NetBIOS name for the computer is already registered on the remote network.

Another computer with the same name has logged on to the remote network, and each computer on the network must be registered with a unique name to verify the following items:

1. The computer with the same name as your computer is not located on the network you are connecting to.

2. The computer is not physically connected to the network that is trying to connect.

643 the server-side NIC has failed.

Please report this error to your system administrator.

644 you will not be able to receive network pop-up messages.

Another computer that is connected to the network is using your computer name, and the message that is written to you is sent to the computer. If you want to receive messages from a remote workstation, you must remember to unregister the public computer before you dial in to the network the next time. This error does not affect messages sent by Outlook, Outlook Express, and Exchange.

645 An internal authentication error occurred.

An internal error has occurred, restarting the computer to ensure that all recent configuration changes have taken effect.

646 The account is not allowed to log on at this time.

Configure the account to restrict access to the network. If you need to access the network at different times of the day instead of the currently configured time, ask your system administrator to change the settings.

647 This account is disabled.

The user account is disabled. This may be because of a duplicate login failure attempt, or because the system administrator disabled the account for security reasons. Ask your system administrator to enable the account in local users and groups.

If you are connecting through network and Dial-up connections, you are prompted to change your password. If you are connecting using rasdial, you can change the password by doing the following:

1. Press Ctrl+alt+del

2. Click "Change Password" and follow the instructions

If you are a system administrator, but your password expires, you cannot change the password yourself and can only be changed by another administrator.

649 account does not have dial-in permissions.

The account does not have dial-in permissions because of the following reasons:

1. You have a valid account in the selected domain, but the account does not have permission to access the remote network. Ask your system administrator to enable dial-in permissions for the user account, or enable dial-in permissions in Routing and Remote Access.

2. The account has either expired, been disabled, or has been locked or the dial-in access has been locked.

An attempt was made to connect outside the allowed server logon time limit, or to attempt to connect outside the time limits of the allowed dial-in access, or the policy applied to the account might not allow dial-in access.

3. The caller's ID rule may prevent the connection from being made, such as the need to dial into the account from the specified number.

4. The remote computer may only allow local accounts to connect.

5. An authentication protocol is required, and the computer cannot negotiate the protocol, or the computer is attempting to use a protocol that is not validated by a policy on the remote computer.

If you have an account that has dial-in permissions in another domain, do the following to use an account on that domain.

1. Right-click the connection, and then click Properties.

2. On the Options tab, select the prompt for name, password, certificate, and so on, and the Windows logon domain check box.

3. In the Security tab, clear the Automatically use my Windows logins and passwords (and domains, if any) check box, and then click OK.

4. Double click the connection, and then click Dial.

5. Specify the appropriate user name, password, and domain.

650 The remote access server is not responding.

This error can be caused by either of the following conditions:

1. The remote access server is not running. Contact your system administrator to make sure that the server is running.

2. The line noise is too high, or the modem cannot negotiate correctly with the remote access server's modem at the selected speed. For any possibility, you should lower the initial speed (bps) of the modem, and then redial.

3. Check the hardware Compatibility List to make sure that your modem is listed.

4. You may need to replace the modem's serial cable.

5. The authentication settings used for the connection may be incorrect. Contact your system administrator to ensure that your authentication settings meet the requirements of the remote access server.

6. Software compression and modem hardware compression may be enabled for the remote access server at the same time. Typically, you enable remote server software compression and disable hardware compression.

651 the modem reported an error.

The modem (or other device) reported an error.

If it is a dial-up connection and you are using a supported external modem, shut down and restart the modem. Shut down and restart.

652 has an unrecognized response from the modem.

The message returned by the modem (or other device) is not listed in one or more of your script files (Pad.inf, Switch.inf, or FILENAME.SCP). If you are using a supported external modem, shut down and restart your modem, and then redial. If the problem persists, try connecting at a lower initial speed.

676 phone line busy.

Redial number. Automatic redial is implemented on the Options tab of the connection properties. If it is a virtual private network (VPN) connection, check the host name or IP address of the destination server, and then try the connection again. Also contact your system administrator to verify that the remote server is running.

678 The server is not responding.

The modem or other device is not off-hook. Check the number and dial again. If it is a virtual private network (VPN) connection, check the host name or IP address of the destination server, and then try the connection again. Also make sure that the phone line (network cable) is plugged into the correct slot in the modem (network card).

679 the system cannot detect the carrier.

The modem or other device is not off-hook. If the remote modem is not off-hook, many modems will return the error. Check the number and dial again. If it is a virtual private network (VPN) connection, check the host name or IP address of the destination server, and then try the connection again. Automatic redial can be implemented in the Options tab of the connection properties.

680 No dial tone.

The phone line may not be connected correctly to the modem or disconnected from the modem. A phone number requires a prefix, such as 9, or a number that is too long to access an external line. Make sure that the phone cable is plugged into the correct slot in the modem. Also make sure to add any special access numbers that are connected to an outside line, such as prefix 9 followed by a comma. For example: 9,555*0100. Check that the phone line has a stutter tone that represents a voice mail message. Many modems cannot dial more than 34 digits. When a longer number is encountered, these modems divide it into two or more strings and dial in only the first string (incomplete). This occurs in the robotics and Multitech demodulator. The only known workaround for this issue is to use a different brand of modem.

691 access is denied because the user name and/or password is not valid on this domain.

The user account is not registered with the domain listed, the password expires, or the information is entered incorrectly. If no domain is specified, the remote access server attempts to authenticate the user name and password in the domain to which it is a member.

Please retype the user name, password, and domain carefully. If you are not sure about this information, consult your system administrator.

692 the modem is having a hardware failure.

The modem (or other device) is not responding because of the following reasons:

The modem shuts down, fails, or is not reliably connected to the computer.

To resolve the issue, do the following:

1) Reset the modem. For more information, consult your hardware documentation.

2) If you are using an external modem, make sure you use the appropriate serial cable and that the cable is connected reliably. You may want to try replacing the modem cable. Similarly, if you are using an adapter to connect an external modem to a serial port, make sure that the adapter is wired correctly for modem communication. For example, a 9-to-25-pin adapter for a mouse does not work correctly in a serial network connection.

3) test the serial port or multiport adapter and replace if necessary.

4) Ensure that the handshake options for the modem are configured correctly. Consult your hardware documentation for information on the different handshake options available for your modem.

5) If Network and Dial-up connections do not support your modem, switch to a supported modem.

6) Verify that other applications (for example, "HyperTerminal") do not use communication ports. If you are using this port, then starting network and Dial-up connections may cause the message to appear.

695 The state machine is not started.

714 no ISDN channels are available for dialing.

All the available ISDN channels are busy. Typically, ISDN provided at the service's BRI ("Base Rate Interface") level provides two channels on which voice or data calls can be made. If both channels are in use, Network and Dial-up connections will not be able to dial out. Hang up one channel and redial.

715 too many errors occur due to poor phone line quality.

There were too many asynchronous errors in the phone line during authentication. Retry. If the problem persists, you should lower the baud rate and disable all the features of the modem that you set.

716 The remote Access Service IP configuration is not available.

There is a problem with the TCP/IP configuration on the remote access server. For example, the connection is requesting a TCP/IP address that is not available from the server.

Contact your system administrator to verify the TCP/IP settings for your server.

717 There is no IP address available in the static pool of the remote Access Service IP address.

Try to use an IP address that does not cause a remote network conflict. If possible, use DHCP to avoid address conflicts.

718 The connection timed out waiting for the remote computer to respond effectively.

The PPP session was started but was interrupted because the remote computer did not respond within the appropriate time. This may be due to poor line quality or due to a server problem.

719 the connection was terminated by the remote computer.

721 The remote computer is not responding.

An attempt was made to use a PPP session, but the remote computer did not respond. This error occurs when the server (for example, Windows NT 3.51 or earlier remote access server or SLIP server) does not support PPP.

This error may also occur if you require a terminal window to log in before the server starts PPP. If you use a terminal window to log in to resolve the issue, you can automate future connection processes.

This error also indicates that there is a hardware error on your computer or on the remote server.

722 invalid data was received from the remote computer. The data will be ignored.

The received PPP packet is not a valid format. The system administrator may need to log PPP events to a file to resolve the issue.

723 phone numbers (including prefixes and suffixes) are too long.

The maximum length of a phone number (including prefix and suffix) is 128 characters.

The 726 IPX protocol cannot be used to dial out simultaneously on multiple modems.

With the IPX protocol, only one connection can be used to dial out.

728 the system cannot find an IP adapter.

There is a problem with TCP/IP configuration. Restart the computer to ensure that all recent configuration changes are in effect.

729 you cannot use SLIP unless you install the IP protocol.

Verify that TCP/IP is installed.

731 the protocol is not configured.

Requires specific information about the PPP control protocol that is not configured. To identify PPP negotiation issues, ask your system administrator to enable PPP logons using the Netsh.exe utility.

732 The PPP control protocol for your computer and remote computer cannot be consistent.
