Background of PHS and 3G network convergence

As an important source of income for fixed-line Chinese telecom operators, PHS has contributed and contributed to fixed-line telecom operators. How to combine Problems in the Development of the PHS network, expand the PHS network business in depth, constantly improve the network structure, explore the value-added services of the PHS network, and contribute to saving the user volume, it is a concern of fixed-line operators. With the advent of the 3G era, how to integrate the PHS network into the Mobile 3G network like the traditional PSTN network into the NGN network is a topic of great concern.

Currently, the 3G core network is a mobile Softswitch core network based on the R4 architecture, including the MSCServer, MGW, and HLR. The core network flow adopts the 3GPPR4 specification. PHS is a digital cellular wireless mobile network, air interface specification for RCRS3G-28, with a similar to GSM Layer 3 wireless resource management, mobility management and call control functions, including location update, authentication, call, paging, switching, etc. The terminal and network are identified by PSNumber (equivalent to IMSI in GSM). The wireless network includes the base station and the base station controller, connect to the core network through the interface. ZTE's PHS System is a mobile network system based on the GSM network architecture, including MSC/VLR (IGW) and HLR. The A interface evolved from the gsm bssap interface, the C and D interfaces are evolved from GSMMAP09.02 (6.3.0). The call process is basically the same as that of GSM. In terms of smart services, ZTE uses an independent SCP, and CAMLE2 protocol is used between IGW and SCP. In terms of short messages, ZTE uses an independent SC, the MAP protocol is used between IGW, HLR, and SC. In terms of the ring tones service, ZTE uses an independent ring tones platform, and the ISUP protocol is used between IGW and the ring tones platform.

To sum up, both the 3G and PHS core networks can provide MAP signaling based on SS7. The call process is basically the same as that of GSM and has the basis for a unified core network.

Feasible Integration

Considering that the PHS network has been built on a large scale and the 3G core network has not yet been built, the following three network models exist in the PHS core network and 3G core network.

For ease of understanding, the core network element of PHS is expressed as MSC/VLR, the Wireless Access side is represented as BSC, and the smart business platform is represented as SCP. The interface protocol between PHSBSC and MSC/VLR is expressed as A', the interface protocol between MSC/VLR and HLR is represented as PHSMAP, and the interface protocol between 3GMSCServer and HLR is represented as 3 GMAP.

Model 1: the MSC/VLR control part of PHS is integrated with the MSCServer of 3G, the bearing part is integrated with the MGW of 3G, and the HLR of PHS is integrated with the HLR of 3G, the SC of PHS is combined with the SC of 3G, and the SCP of PHS is combined with the SCP of 3G. This networking enables the integration of control, bearer, and business. Different access network types are shielded through the control layer, which is an ideal network model.

Model 2: the MSC/VLR control part of PHS is integrated with the MSCServer of 3G, and the bearing part is integrated with the MGW of 3G. However, HLR, SCP, and SC are separated, as shown in figure 2. This kind of networking is one of the most basic forms of convergence between two networks. Other forms include integration of HLR, SC or SCP, which is the transitional phase of convergence between two networks during the 3G construction process.

Model 3: All-in-One networks and discrete networks exist simultaneously. This kind of networking will exist in large quantities and long term after 3G construction. The qualified regions can be integrated and the areas that do not meet the requirements are separated. hybrid networking also meets the engineering characteristics of phased construction and gradual implementation.

Based on the smart networks of domestic operators, fixed-line operators can freely bring their PHS numbers to 3G networks.

ZTE Solution

Because ZTE and other vendors have different core network capabilities, their solutions are also different. At present, ZTE's 3G core network based on the V3 platform can already bring the PHS wireless network. That is to say, ZTE V3 core network already has the above features.

Because the' interface between the PHS wireless network and the PHS core network is not public, the 3G core network of ZTE cannot bring the UT and Lucent PHS wireless networks. Therefore, for the PHS networks of other manufacturers, we proposed another solution.

When ZTE and other vendors have achieved PHSMAP-based interconnection, all user data can be cut to HLR, private a' interfaces are retained between MSC/VLR and wireless networks of other manufacturers' core network switches. Meanwhile, PHSMAP is used to interconnect MSC/VLR with HLR and SC, and CAP is used to interconnect with SCP, in this way, the PHS and 3G numbers can be mixed, and service convergence can be achieved to a certain extent.

With the maturity of technical conditions, the convergence of networks, especially the convergence of network edge areas, is becoming the trend of Telecom Development. From the integration of voice and data to the integration of wired and wireless networks, the convergence of transmission networks and various service networks will become an inevitable trend of network development. The PHS System adopts the mobile softswitch architecture. The system construction fully complies with the requirements for next-generation network construction and is the same as that for the future 3G internal network construction. Currently, the hardware of ZTE's PHS System directly meets the requirements of 3G networks, you can upgrade the corresponding system software to implement a 3G network and meet the 3G/PHS hybrid networking requirements. We hope that we can extend the 3G/PHS fusion path on the path of continuous innovation.
