Microsoft teaches you how to set up a home wireless network. It should be more authoritative. Paste the main content below.

1.

Select a wireless device

The first step is to ensure that you have the required device. When searching for products in a store or on the Internet, you may notice that there are devices that support the following three wireless network technologies: 802.11a, 802.11b, and 802.11g. We recommend that you use 802.11 Gbit/s, because this technology has excellent performance and is compatible with almost all devices.

Wireless Router

The router converts the signals transmitted through the Internet connection to wireless broadcasting, which is a bit like a wireless telephone base station. Make sure that you have purchased a wireless router instead of a wireless access device.

Wireless Network Adapter

The wireless network adapter connects the computer and the wireless router in a wireless way. If it is a new computer, it may have built-in wireless features. If so, no wireless network adapter is required. If you want to purchase an adapter for a desktop, purchase a USB wireless network adapter. If you are using a laptop, purchase a PC-card-based network adapter. Ensure that each computer on the network has an adapter.

Note:To make installation easier, select the network adapter from the same supplier that produces the wireless network router. For example, if you find a suitable Linksys router, select the Linksys network adapter. To make the device purchase process easier, you can purchase a set of products, such as D-Link, Netgear, Linksys, Microsoft, and Buffalo. If you are using a desktop, make sure that you have an available USB port to insert a wireless network adapter. If no USB port is available, purchase a hub to add another port.

2.

Connect to a wireless router

Since the Internet connection will be temporarily disconnected, please print these instructions before further operations.

First, locate the cable or DSL modem and unplug it to turn it off.

Connect the wireless router to the modem. The modem should be able to connect to the Internet immediately. Later, after everything is connected, the computer will connect to the router wirelessly, And the router will send communication to the Internet through the modem.

Next, connect the router to the modem:

Note:The following instructions apply to Linksys Wireless routers. The labels and images of the ports on your vro。 may be different from those on your vro. For more help information, see the documentation attached to the device.

If your computer is already directly connected to the modem:Unplug the network cable from the back of the computer and insert it into the port labeled as Internet, WAN, or WLAN at the back of the router.

If the computer is not currently connected to the Internet:Insert one end of the network cable attached to the router into the modem, and the other end into the Internet, WAN, or WLAN port on the wireless router.

If the computer is already connected to the vro:Unplug the network cable that is currently connected to the Internet, WAN, or WLAN port on the router, and then insert this end into the Internet, WAN, or WLAN port on the wireless router. Then, unplug any other network cable and insert it into the available port on the wireless router. The original router is no longer needed because it has been replaced by a new wireless router.

Then, insert a cable or DSL modem and open it. Wait a few minutes so that you have time to connect to the Internet and then insert and enable the wireless router. One minute later, the Internet, WAN, or WLAN indicators on the wireless router should be lit to indicate that the modem has been successfully connected.

3.

Configure a Wireless Router

The network cable attached to the wireless router should be used to temporarily connect the computer to an available network port on the wireless router (the label is not any port of the Internet, WAN or WLAN ). Open the computer if necessary. It should be automatically connected to the vro.

Next, open Internet Explorer and enter the address used to configure the router.

You may be prompted to enter the password. The address and password used depend on the type of the vro. Therefore, see the instructions attached to the vro.

As a quick reference, the following table shows the default addresses, user names, and passwords of some common router manufacturers.

Internet Explorer displays the vro configuration page. Most default settings should apply, but you should configure the following three settings:

1.

The wireless network name, that is, the SSID.This name is used to identify your network. You should select a unique name that is not used by any neighbor.

2.

Helps protect wireless network encryption (WEP) or Wi-Fi Protected Access (WPA ).For most vrouters, you need to provide a password. The vro uses this password to generate multiple keys. Make sure that your password is unique and long enough (you do not need to remember the password ).

3.

Used to control the management password of the wireless network.Like any other password, the password should not use words that can be found in the dictionary, but a combination of letters, numbers, and symbols. Remember this password because you are required to provide it when changing the vro settings.

The specific steps to configure these settings depend on the type of the vro you are using. After changing the configuration settings, you must click"Save settings ","Application" or"OK" to save the changes.

Now, you should disconnect the network cable from the computer.

4.

Connect to a computer

If your computer does not have built-in wireless network support, insert the network adapter into the USB port and place the antenna on the computer (if you are using a desktop ), or insert the network adapter into an empty PC Card slot (if a laptop is used ). Windows XP will automatically detect the new adapter and may prompt you to insert the CD attached to the adapter. Follow the instructions on the screen to complete the configuration process.

Note:The following steps only apply to Windows XP Service Pack 2. If you are running Windows XP but have not installed Service Pack 2, connect your computer to a wireless router, download and install Service Pack 2 from the following website: Protect your PC.

Windows XP should display a notification icon indicating that the wireless network has been found.

Follow these steps to connect your computer to a wireless network:

1.

Right-click the Wireless Network icon in the lower-right corner of the screen, and click "view available wireless connections". If you encounter any problems, see the documents attached to the network adapter. Please call their technical support.

2.

The "wireless network connection" window appears. You will see a list of wireless networks with the selected network name. If you do not see your network, click"Refresh the Network List ". Click your network, and then click "Connect" in the lower-right corner".

3.

Windows XP prompts you to enter the key. EnterIn the "Network key" and "Confirm network key" boxes, click"Connection ".

4.

Windows XP displays the network connection progress. After the connection, you can close the "wireless network connection" window. Completed.

Note:If the "wireless network connection" window is still displayed"Getting network address" may be because the encryption key you entered is incorrect.
