Articles of different topics are categorized into different categories, helping visitors find what they want and improve the user experience. Therefore, it is necessary to create an article classification for your website. So, how does the WordPress system create and manage article classifications? Let's introduce a brief introduction to today's initiative.

Before creating a classification, it is best to have a clearer idea of the content orientation of your site, and then list the preferred category names (typically 2-6 words).

Add a new category directory

There are 4 options for adding a category by default:

• name – The name of the category, usually 2-6 words, such as "WordPress theme"
• aliases – mainly used in URLs in the taxonomy directory, such as "Http://www.wpdaxue.com/category/themes" in the themes is "WordPress theme" Alias (WordPress will automatically add/category to the URL to mark the category directory by default)
• Parent – the classification hierarchy, which defaults to a first-level classification, and sub-classifications can be added, and if the contents of the first-level category can also be categorized into more detailed sections, consider adding sub-classifications
• Description – Describe what this classification is primarily about, and some WordPress themes will call this description as a description or a classification of description

Set Default classification

The main use of the default classification is that if you write an article without manually specifying the classification of the article, it is automatically divided into the default category.

Go Backstage – Setup – compose, you can set the "Default article category directory"

Manage existing classifications

You can manage the menu by placing the mouse over the category name: Edit | Quick Edit | Delete | View (as shown in "WordPress development"), you can click on the menu to see it separately.

It is important to note that if a category is "default classification", it cannot be deleted, you can first set the other classification as the default category, then you can delete this category.

View Category ID

Sometimes, for example, some theme setting options, you need to fill in the category ID, in order to invoke the contents of the category, you need to see the category ID

Place the mouse over the category name, then right-copy the link address to get the following link:

Http://xxxxxx/edit-tags.php?action=edit&taxonomy=category&tag_id=4&post_type=post

Where id=4 is the ID of this category
