Cabling room construction and O & M management

How can we solve these two problems? Based on different features of the design and construction, the solution can be divided into two aspects: the data center construction phase and the O & M management phase.

Standardized Design and Construction determine the quality of the IDC

When talking about the design and construction of the data center cabling system, Wu Jian, Technical Director of the Greater China region of the US company, pointed out: "in the data center construction phase, at present, we do not have an independent standard to describe what a data center needs to do during the design and construction process. The most popular practice in the industry is 'best practices '." The "best practice" of data center design and construction involves two major aspects: first, preliminary design (not related to the product) and second, product selection.

Among them, the preliminary design is the top priority. There are also two principles in the preliminary design:

First, is it flexible and scalable. WU Jian pointed out: "the life cycle of a cabling system is very long. Considering the applications that have been applied for ten or two years later, there must be a rough estimate, in the future, it is necessary to consider whether the cable can carry 10 Gigabit or even 100,000 megabytes. It is especially important to select the type of the cable ."

Second, consider combining energy conservation and emission reduction issues.

The combination of wiring system and energy saving and emission reduction is mainly reflected in the design of "hot and cold channels" in the data room. The long cabinet arrangement provides conditions for low-cost heating and cooling channel isolation. The air flow in the data room is organized to isolate the heating and cooling channels. This maximizes energy efficiency and achieves energy saving and emission reduction. The design of the wiring system should fully ensure that the cabinets and other equipment have sufficient space for connecting cables when arranged according to the standard of the heating and cooling channels, and the smooth flow of cold and hot air will not be affected when going online or offline.

In terms of product selection, there are actually some principles to follow, which generally include the following five points:

(1) Cost-performance: the selected cables, connectors, and electrical equipment should have good physical and electrical performance, and the price is moderate;

(2) Practicality: the system to be designed and selected should meet the requirements of the user for communication lines within the current and next 10 to 15 years;

(3) Flexibility: The information port equipment is reasonable and plug-and-play;

(4) good scalability: Use a structure and connectors that are easy to expand as much as possible;

(5) easy to manage: a uniform logo is provided to facilitate wiring and jumper.

Efficient management ensures normal operation of the IDC

After the data center is built and used, the factors that affect the overall performance of the data center are gradually transferred from the basic performance of the equipment to the "Human Factors" of O & M management. We often see this situation in our daily work: when the device fails, the O & M personnel struggled to find the corresponding cable interface of the faulty device in a huge "line group.

This example may seem exaggerated, but it does not mean how to efficiently manage the cabling system after a period of running in the IDC, in fact, the overall O & M efficiency of the data center is largely determined.

So what should we do to better manage the cabling system? There are two important points for wiring management:

First, it is best to set up a dedicated person to manage the cabling system of the data center, so that different personnel may not make mistakes during operations due to the deviation of records and usage habits.

Second, do not rely on the human brain to remember, you can use a tool or some efficient management means to manage the wiring system, it is best to integrate into the company's IT management process. You can also manage the accessories of the distribution frame from the hardware aspect, such as Grounding accessories and logo accessories. In this aspect of management, the more advanced intelligent distribution frame system is also a good choice.

There are still many problems in the design and O & M of cabling systems in many data centers, data center users do not have sufficient financial and manpower investment in the design, product selection, human maintenance, and Talent Training of the cabling system, which restricts the overall performance of the data center.
