Can 4G be the savior of high-speed Internet access for mobile devices?

Theoretically, the connection speed of a 4G network can be 100 mbps (mbps. However, we may see that the download speed of 4G is only 30 mbps at most. However, according to the author's research into the competitiveness of end users, it is usually found that the speed of over 10 Mbps is not fast.

In a survey of 5000 U.S. smartphone and tablet users, the author found that "Although the desktop, smartphone, or tablet work platform is different, it is expected to change to a certain extent. But they certainly increase. Therefore, the user expects that no matter what kind of device is used, the network performance must be very fast. However, for many websites, especially smartphones and tablets, slow web pages often disappoint consumers. Research shows that the "expectation gap" on performance has been significantly tightened across platforms, while suppliers ignore the adverse factors about the expected increase in network speed performance.

When talking about the frustrating mobile network experience, 2/3 of smartphone users quoted the phrase "Slow webpage loading. Nearly half of developers believe that the next biggest difficulty is that the website is not fully optimized for mobile terminals such as smartphones ." 64% of smartphone users want the website to be loaded within four seconds, but 82% expect the mobile website to be loaded within five seconds.

Tablet users share the same feeling. The authors found that 60% of tablet users expect less than three seconds to log on to a website. However, in the survey on the Performance of popular websites, almost no website can provide such a speed for tablet or smartphone users.

Obviously, mobile users want to get faster Internet access, and nearly half of them will choose to optimize the website for their smartphones, but this alone is not enough.

Limited network bandwidth

First, make sure there is sufficient 4G broadband for our use. The more 4G users there are in a region, more available bandwidth will be allocated between users. Therefore, for at&t and communication companies, it is necessary to take measures to slow down the network speed, that is, "throttling", to ensure that everyone can get the available bandwidth they share.

Immature HTTP protocol

In addition, Hypertext Transfer Protocol itself is not mature enough. Chris Storm, author of The SPDY application layer protocol, explains that, taking each user using up to six connections as an example, it shows that an HTTP webpage needs to start and stop many web page connections on each page. If your connection exceeds 4 mbps, you will not feel much improvement in the webpage loading performance on pages with a large number of common text or Java description languages, he said.

Chris Storm shows that to avoid the above problems, for mobile users and websites targeting these users, they need to migrate to support Google's application layer protocol SPDY (an alternative protocol for HTTP) in the browser and network server.

Storm explained that "the SPDY application layer protocol has no limit on the number of network requests and can be released simultaneously in a single SPDY connection. Because requests are staggered over a single channel, this protocol is more efficient than the transfer control protocol. On the other hand, HTTP can only obtain one type of resources and support each time, and each time there can be up to six connections. The network effect of the SPDY application layer protocol is to reduce latency as the web browser does, and the server does not need to waste time to exchange data requests and responses ." For mobile users, only using the SPDY application level protocol can increase the webpage performance from 28% to 55%.

Don Aoki, senior vice president of Keynote, added: "This survey found that most mobile users use their mobile browsers to perform consumer behavior, personal tasks such as email and banking provide services to smartphone or tablet users through mobile app access. Mobile consumers need to know how to access and use these application resources. For brands, the key is to integrate and develop mobile development strategies across multiple types of mobile device platforms, and use online search tools, for example, the Keynote network is used to evaluate the application experience of smartphone and tablet users.

In short, no matter what you decide to do, one thing is certain. If a mobile user is dissatisfied with the website's webpage speed, or you need to improve the loading speed of Your webpage to improve the user experience; you can either say goodbye to your smartphone or tablet users.
