Although the concept of "Iot" has been on fire for a whole year, in fact, various operators have already launched many projects in the name of "Industrial Applications. Such as street lamp monitoring, hydrological monitoring, vehicle positioning, Smart Home, and electric power remote meter reading. These services are based on various types of sensors for information collection, using GPRS or SMS as the information transmission channel, and then processing and controlling the background. The basic structure is as follows:

As a maintenance and management personnel for short message devices, I am always thinking about how to make short messages consume less network resources and enjoy high efficiency, currently, services with large device balance can also play a role in Iot applications.

I. Defects and advantages of SMS in Iot applications

The mechanism of SMS is to store and forward messages, that is, the sender does not confirm the recipient's status when sending messages. We sent a text message and saw "sent successfully" on the mobile phone. This indicates that the text message has been successfully submitted to the SMS center, as to whether the other party is starting, whether it is not covered by the signal, and when it will receive it, it is unknown for the time being. Therefore, the text message service is connectionless from end to end. In actual applications, the success rate cannot be due to terminal status, wireless environment, low-probability system errors, and other reasons. I once heard a group customer manager say one thing: a logistics company uses GPS + text message to Schedule vehicles. A vehicle sends a message indicating that it is in Gulou square, Nanjing, the vehicle monitoring center immediately contacted him and asked him to do something. The driver said: I have been to the east of the city, just a few kilometers apart. This is caused by SMS latency.

Therefore, for highly reliable applications, connection-oriented solutions such as GPRS and TD (which are replaced by TD in the following article) are first considered. The cost is higher than that of using SMS as a data transmission channel.

So what are the advantages of SMS? First, the cost of M2M terminals is low, as long as there is a text message sending and receiving module, there is no need for the TD module. Second, the text message service occupies far less wireless resources and IP Address resources than TD. If an M2M terminal is not connected to the TD network, the M2M management platform cannot find it because it has not been assigned an IP address. Therefore, the terminal can only initiate a connection first, only addresses and network resources can be allocated for communication. For applications that require frequent data transmission, the terminal must always be online to access the TD network. The Short Message solution is that the management platform and the terminal can initiate a connection in both directions (as long as there is a number, you can receive the short message without an IP address), and only initiate a connection when necessary, therefore, network resources are greatly reduced compared with TD. Third, the power consumption of the SMS module is much smaller than that of the TD module, so using SMS is also a low-carbon method.

Ii. How can I develop short messages?

Whether the implementation method in TCP/IP can be used for reference: IP packets are non-connection-oriented and unreliable. However, they are controlled by upper-layer protocols such as TCP, so that unreliable IP packets can also be used in highly reliable applications, the use of upper-Layer Protocol control should also be able to make text messages from unreliable, best-effort businesses into highly reliable businesses. Only software transformation is required, which is less difficult and less costly.

It is the classic three-way handshake mode of TCP/IP.

Based on the above model, you only need to use software on the M2M terminal and M2M management platform to add control fields to the text message content, without affecting the existing text message standards.

You can refer to the TCP/IP layered structure to divide the SMS control into three layers, and use the existing SMS sending and receiving as the basic channel, that is, Layer 2. Layer 2nd is used to control connections, and layer 3rd defines upper-layer applications. Visible:

III.WmmpProtocol combination

Since, China Mobile and the Chinese Emy of sciences have studied sensor network technology and applications. At present, China Mobile Research Institute has developed the IOT Application Protocol (wmmp protocol ), A Unified Business and user management platform was built, a mature network architecture was proposed, and an industrial alliance was established based on its own wmmp protocol, it plays an important role in promoting application standardization, reducing terminal costs, and promoting industrial scale.

I checked the wmmp protocol and read the M2M platform and application system interface book. In the "6.2 interface description, the standard HTTP-based Web Service and persistent connection are mentioned. Both methods use TD (GPRS) as the transmission channel, SMS is used for management and control in the wmmp protocol, and does not need to be used as a business channel.

Personal Opinion: if the text message service is transformed to the reliability through the upper-layer software and encapsulated according to the wmmp Management and Control Specifications, it will be embedded into the M2M communication module, it can be used for Iot applications with low data transmission volume and low real-time requirements, such as power remote meter reading and street lamp remote control. Combined with the big data transmission function of TD, china Mobile's IoT specifications will be very complete and more competitive.
