Article Title: Red Hat CEO: cloud computing will all use Linux. Linux is a technology channel of the IT lab in China. Includes basic categories such as desktop applications, Linux system management, kernel research, embedded systems, and open source.
Red Hat's new CEO, jimwhitehust, places the target on the cloud.
In January this year, the former Delta airline (DeltaAirlines) operating director, who was in the hands of mongowszulik and who opened the CEO of the original code manufacturer redhatsub, believed that cloud computing was the company's top priority. In a broad sense, cloud computing is an operational service that anyone on the network can use. more accurately, it is a large-scale computing service on a more elastic infrastructure.
"Cloud computing will all use Linux," Whitehirst said in an interview ."
The CEO of RedHat always plays a balanced role. One side is the open source code community, volunteers, and professionals with great enthusiasm and enthusiasm. they work together to create Red Hat software packages, testing, coordination, sales, and support. The other side is practical customers. they only need useful technologies. Red Hat must be both sides-it is not a parasite that crawls others' efforts, nor is it a useless dealer. you can sell things that can be downloaded for free.
It is the whiteurst of Linux users for many years. before the opening of this year's LinuxWorldConferenceandExpo, we were interviewed by CNET:
Q: What is the most surprising thing you have ever felt when you joined the RedHat?
Whitehirst: I finally understood the joke. I used to be a corporate management manager. just like other corporate executives, I have a high IT budget. My budget is about the same as that of RedHat last year. You may wonder why my IT costs keep rising, but I get fewer and fewer features? Every IT staff has the same problem: my costs have risen, but wait! I bought a notebook and spent half of my money three years ago. Why does my cost increase? Now I know why.
S & P500 ranks among the top 20 companies in S & P, and 7 of them are technology companies, except Google. That is because the conversion cost is too high, and the Red Hat has a very high residual reputation, because we are considered to be an alternative to conversion. Oracle announced a 20% price increase when the overall economy began to decline. if it was not very certain that no one could use other software, how dare you do this? The high cost of transformation leads to an increasing cost of infrastructure. Once caught, you cannot escape.
Q: I admit that redhat is the main alternative to existing software vendors, but redhat is not a new company and it is not easy to get rid of RedHat. it may be easier to replace RHEL with IBM AIX,...
Whitehirst: It's easy. you don't have to pay us.
Q: Is there a conversion cost?
Whitehirst: you can continue using the same software without paying us. The point is that the software is free. you don't have to support it, but you can get it from other places. If you think we have no additional value, don't pay us and continue using the software, so we must provide additional value with services and support.
Q: What if a customer wants to switch to NovellSuseLinuxEnterprise?
Whitehirst: you must ask different customers. Many of us have threatened us to repeat the contract price. Fortunately, we have little loss in that respect. According to IDC figures, there are almost the same number of free red hats and paid red hats. Obviously, people value those features, but many will not pay for them.
Q: What about high-growth companies like Google and Amazon with a large scale-out infrastructure? Are you worried that these companies will use Linux for free?
Whitehirst: Amazon is a paying customer, and Google is a rare exception. As the company's technology becomes more sophisticated, some people may think that the value of external support will decrease, but in fact, the importance of our services will also increase. For example, if Amazon wants to add something to the (Linux) core, who can do it for them because they need some EC2 Features? We can.
At present, we have connected Uli Drepper to some important customers and invited Intel to discuss the power management of chips, their needs, and what we can give back. If you are not a red hat customer, you cannot participate. All those that do not pay are small websites.
Whitehirst: the number of changes from pay-as-you-go to free is very small, and the number of changes from free to paid is very large. When customers become larger, they will find that we may need support and authentication.
Q: The recent wave of building a large-scale network infrastructure is widely used. your products tend to be used for independent and single work. what do you think about entering a very large, coordinated, and distributed infrastructure level?
Whitehirst: like using RHEL on the Amazon EC2 cloud ......
Q: In terms of management, more than 1000 individual systems are provided?
Whitehirst: our current job is mostly to build an effective grid or cloud computing Foundation. Those things are born from the inside or outside. I don't know, but it is obviously the next generation of infrastructure. Therefore, with our virtualization policy, LinuxAutomation, our authenticated applications can be executed anywhere. Let's take a look at our products launched this year. The Red Hat MRG for messaging and grid, a brand new business management unit, and the IPA that integrates security protection. we work with a large customer to switch things from their own data center to the cloud and then back.
If someone wants to move things out of the firewall, they must be sure that things are still usable. Multi-platform authentication for Linux has clear value, so Amazon chose us. Anyone can execute almost any software in that data center. it is certified and they can get support.
Q: What about the management tools?
Whitehirst: we can perform conversions in application software execution. many tools are available, but we are still developing.
Q: But you can automate it-if I need 18 virtual routines on the cloud, can I turn them on and then turn them off?
Whitehirst: That's right. Our user interface is not as good as VMware, but we should have a very unique feature to be publicized. Amazon is currently the largest single routine, that is our virtualization technology, they are working on mobile at any time.
