In fact, Internet TV, tablet computers, and smart phones are all new product categories in the process of changing the form of Internet computing. These new products are opportunities for Linux.

For application developers, the advantage of developing applications for the Linux platform is that the Linux platform supports a wider range of hardware. "The Linux Foundation will try to make Linux run on more hardware platforms. Currently, Linux runs well on x86, ARM, MIPS, and even Power platforms. Developers only need to focus on better application development without considering hardware issues ." Jim. In addition, the size gap between Internet TVs and smart phones is very large. However, with the QT platform, application developers can adapt to different devices without having to make large-scale modifications to the program, which makes it possible for users to use the same program on different devices.

"The key is that users have accepted the concept of using these devices to connect to the Internet for communication. Next, the competition focuses on providing a very friendly user interface. With Linux, developers don't have to write their own kernels and core libraries, so they only need to focus on the user interface ." Jim introduced that the core libraries and kernels used by platforms such as Android and MeeGo are the same, which allows developers to launch a new interface more friendly system faster to meet users' needs.

From high performance computing to desk lamp

Mobile devices are only part of the Linux blueprint. "Maybe five years later, every lamp is controlled by a small Linux system ." Jim said that computing has penetrated into vehicles, electrical appliances, and more devices. The future embedded field is a broader market. In addition, Linux has made great achievements in high-performance computing and cloud computing. "Most cloud computing provided by Amazon, Google, and other vendors is based on the Linux platform ." Jim said.

Why do users choose Linux? "In the embedded field, can you imagine running Windows on a desk lamp? ." Jim introduced that, on the one hand, open-source systems allow product developers to invest in new product manufacturing at any time without asking the Linux Foundation "Can I design a new desk lamp with Linux". In addition, product developers can have full control over their own products. Third, developers can save a lot of software authorization costs.

So far, no Chinese company has been added to the Linux Foundation. "RedHat is a successful Linux company. In the future, there will be more such successful companies, some of which will come from China ." Jim. This year, the Linux foundation set up branches in China. "China is a powerful power. In the future, China will need to use software to create new products. The Linux foundation is eager to see more Chinese enterprises invest in the Linux camp and develop more excellent products ."
