Change WMP12 video Decoder in Windows7

Recently, foreign users have reported that the use of Windows 7 RC Windows Media Player (WMP12) to play the MKV format of High-definition video has a lot of problems, playback is not smooth, subtitles can not be loaded, can not be reversed. The user then fed the problem to the Windows 7 Development Group, and soon he got a response: Microsoft said the problem was most likely caused by poor compatibility between the decoder and Windows 7, and suggested that he replace the decoder and try again.

The user, using the GraphEdit check, found that the decoder used was a Microsoft Dtv/dvd Decoder with Windows 7, which, according to a previous reply from Microsoft, should have been the problem with the Windows 7 RC self-contained decoder.

The problem was found, and the solution was simply to replace the band with other decoders. But it's easier said than done, but the actual operation still takes some effort. From a workaround from a foreign website called Hacking Windows 7 Media Center, this operation needs to be modified by modifying the registry.

Here is the procedure: (we recommend that you back up the registry first, just in case).

1. Start Registry Editor and navigate to Hkey_local_machine\software\microsoft\directshow\preferred

2. Right-click "Preferred" and select "Permissions (Permissions)"

3. Click "Advanced (Advanced)" At the bottom right of the window, then go to the "Owner" tab, select "Administrators" in the "Change owner to" box, and check the "Replace the child container and owner of the object" (replace owner on Subcontainers and Objects) ", click" OK "to make the operation effective.

4. Return to the "Permissions" window, in the above "Security" box, select "Administrators", and then in the "Administrators" below the "permission" to check the full control. This allows you to modify the registry's preferred entry.

5. Then find these two items in the Content box on the right:

Double-click them, pop the Edit String dialog box, and fill in the data value with the decoder CLSid (class identifier) you want to use.

The above action only uses a Third-party decoder for WMP12 when playing local video files.
