Verizon Wireless announced today that it will join the "Ubuntu operator consultant group (CAG)" established by Canonical, which means the company will work with other members to promote the development of the operating system of the ubantu smartphone.
Last month, Canonical unveiled the Ubuntu operator's Advisory Group, saying the members of the Advisory Group were the only ones who could get early information about the equipment manufacturers who planned to support the system, and Ubuntu smartphone launch partners. Although Canonical is the developer of Ubuntu mobile OS, members of the Panel can also influence the development roadmap of the platform.
The first members of the Advisory Group include Deutsche Telekom, Everything Everywhere, Korea Telecom, Italy Telecom, LG UPlus, Portugal Telecom, and SK Telecom, all of which are from non-US regions. With Verizon, the probability of Ubuntu mobile phones logging into the United States has increased. Currently, China Unicom and Smartfren are confirmed to be members of the Advisory Group.
Canonical's announcement states: "Verizon is the largest mobile network operator in the United States, and close cooperation with them gives us an opportunity to create Ubuntu as the most attractive alternative platform ".
Samir Vaidya, Verizon Device Technical Director, said: "Verizon joins the Ubuntu Advisory Group to participate in technical discussions related to the platform, it brings new and exciting features to developers and consumers ".
When asked if Verizon has plans to release Ubuntu mobile phones, the two companies share a similar attitude, pointing out that Verizon's participation in the panel does not mean it decides to sell Ubuntu mobile phones. This is a technology forum, verizon will learn more about the Ubuntu platform.
In addition, Canonical revealed that mobile phones pre-installed with Ubuntu OS may be commercially available in May first quarter of 2014.
