System service Optimization Preparation knowledge

What is a service?

A service is a program or process used by a system to perform a specified system function that supports other applications, typically running in the background. The service does not appear in the Program window or dialog box compared to the programs that the user runs, and only in Task manager can they be observed.

How do I modify the startup type of a service?

Enter "Services.msc" or "service" in the "Search Programs and Files" section of the Win 7 Start menu to search for "service" items, and then open the Service Management List window after clicking. Double-click any service to view or modify its properties, and in the Properties window you can modify the startup type to Manual, automatic, automatic (delayed startup), or disabled (as shown in Figure 1).

What is the difference between automatic and automatic (delay startup)?

Automatic startup means that the service item is loaded at the same time the computer is started to support other programs running on this service basis. and "Automatic (delay Start)" is a very user-friendly design of Win 7. Booting in this way can delay startup of the service item after the system has been started for a while, and can be a good solution to some low configuration computers because too many service items are loaded causing the computer to start slowly or respond slowly after startup.

What is the difference between "manual" and "disabled"?

When the service startup status is manual, the process shuts down but can still be activated under certain circumstances, and when set to disabled, the service cannot run unless the user manually modifies the property.

Which services need to be started manually?

"Manual" mode, as the name implies is that this service will not be loaded as the system starts, and requires other service activation or user access to the service management interface, manually start it or modify its properties to "automatic" start.

This pattern is commonly used when you need to turn on features that are not already on the system. In the case of the "Application Identity" service, the default state of the service is "manual", that is, it is not started. However, when a user needs to use the AppLocker feature, the service must be manually enabled (modified to automatic state), otherwise the AppLocker feature will not function properly.

What should I pay attention to before I change it?

Modifying the system service may cause unexpected problems, so it is a good idea to back up the default service state before you modify it. method to open the Service Management window and click "Operations → export List", select "Save Type" as txt text file or CSV file, it is recommended to select the latter, the file can be opened with Excel.

In addition, if there is an inability to access the system due to a modification error, you can press the F8 key at power-on to select Enter Safe mode and modify service startup properties in Safe mode.

Hands-on operating system Services I control

No more LAN Disabled services

Computer Browser, referred to as CB, translated is the meaning of "Computer Browser", its role is to browse other computers on the local area network, and provide a list of computers in the local area network and Automatic Updates. As the name suggests, if your computer is in a local area network, then looking at other computers on the local area network (that is, viewing your network Neighborhood) requires support for this service. But if your computer is not in the LAN environment, it is only a stand-alone operation, then the service can obviously be disabled.

It is similar to the HomeGroup Listener (family group listening Service, HL) and HomeGroup PRovider (family group support Services, HP), the former role is to maintain the family group computer connection between the configuration, for the family group to provide reception services; The role of the latter is to perform tasks related to the configuration and maintenance of the homegroup. If your computer is not in a homegroup, you can certainly choose to disable it.

Tip: The above three services are related to LAN and family groups, readers can choose to disable or set to "manual" mode according to their actual situation. Recommended if it is a desktop, you can choose to disable, if it is a notebook, or do not disable the good, especially Computer Browser service, after all, notebook is often to connect to other networks.

You can also disable offline files (for short, offline File services) and server services. The role of the former is to cache shared content on the network locally, allowing users to access shared files offline, and the latter to allow the computer to share files over the network.

All unused features are disabled

Although Win 7 offers many features that we may not use, we can selectively shut down these services to achieve the goal of effectively saving system resources.

If your computer is a desktop or does not have a power management policy enabled, you can choose to disable it, and if your computer is not connected to a printer, you can choose to disable the Print Spooler service, which is to load the file into memory for later printing; If you're not using a tablet, you can disable the Tablet PC Input Service, which is a feature that provides tablet support and stroke sensing, and disables portable Device if you rarely use a removable hard disk, such as a bulk removable storage device. Enumerator service, which is a service that provides the ability to synchronize the removable mass storage device.

In addition, if you have turned off the system's Automatic Updates feature, you can also choose to disable the Background Intelligent Transfer Service (Background Intelligent Transfer Service, or bits). Its role is to use idle network bandwidth to transmit data between the client and the server in the background, primarily to support the Windows Update feature of the system.

Tip: Turning off the BITS service may cause some applications that depend on the BITS service to automatically update or download the updates normally. If a user causes some software to fail to update after disabling the service, you can choose to restart the service.

In addition to these services, if you do not use the latest Windows Media Player Media Library network sharing feature in Win 7, you can also disable the Windows Media Player Network sharing service. A stand-alone user is also disabled.

The function of the chicken is forbidden

In Win 7, in addition to the features not commonly used, there are some relatively chicken features, you can also choose to disable them.

Diagnostic Policy Service (diagnostic Policy Service, referred to as DPS) services can be completely disabled. It is a service that provides problem detection, troubleshooting, and diagnostics support for Windows components. What is common is that when a failure occurs in the system, a dialog box pops up asking if you need to enable troubleshooting to help you find out why. Users who have used this feature know that there is little chance of solving the problem, so disable it!

When this service is disabled, the system's diagnostics tool will not function correctly, prompting the diagnostic Policy Service has been disabled (as shown in Figure 2).

In addition to DPS services, we can also turn off the diagnostic service host, which is the reason for the specific analysis of the failure. Also similar is the diagnostic system Host, which is a diagnostic service for systems components. Its role is to detect problems with Windows components, troubleshoot failures, and provide solutions. In general, it is not available, and similar to the DPS service, there is little chance of resolving the problem, so you can choose to disable it.

If the DPS service also has some effect, then distributed Link Tracking Client (clients Distributed Link Tracking service, referred to as DLTC) services can be said to be completely useless! Its primary role is to maintain a link between the NTFS file system files within the computer or the computer within the local area network. To be blunt, shortcuts, object links, and embedded links are still valid after the target file has been renamed or moved. And in the LAN, only all computers have opened the service is effective, so can be disabled completely.

In addition, the DLTC service can be "comparable", I am afraid that the Windows Error Reporting Service (Windows system Error Reporting Services) Service! This service is believed to be familiar, and its role is to report errors when the program stops running or stops responding. and allows the solution to be provided, and the corresponding error logs and reports are generated. Have you ever used it? So forbid it, don't hesitate at all!

Auto Play disabled more secure

Shell hardware detection, hardware detection service, referred to as SHD, its role is to automatically play the device or hardware to provide a notification function, that is, we commonly used to insert flash after the operation prompts (as shown in Figure 3). If you think that this hint doesn't have much practical meaning, or even becomes annoying, simply disable it so that you can connect flash or removable devices in the future without any hint.

Tip: Disabling the function is to disable the automatic playback function, but also to a certain extent to reduce the risk of system poisoning, why not?

If you turn off the SHD service first, the system may also prompt you to turn off Windows Image Acquisition (Windows Imaging Capture Service, WIA) service, which provides image capture services for scanners and cameras. In general, you can turn off the service if your computer does not have a scanner attached to it. Ordinary users generally do not connect to the camera, because the copy picture is usually done using a reader.

Tip: This service defaults to "manual" status, if you connect the scanner, then do not modify the status of the service, if you do not have the option to manually modify to "disabled."

Search features vary from person to person

The search features provided in Win 7 (Windows search) have made great strides, but for this feature, different users may have different positioning. If users need to use this feature frequently to search for documents, you can maintain the status quo (delayed startup), and if users rarely use the search feature of Win 7, you can choose to disable the service.

Install kill house arrest with firewall service

Windows Firewall, our familiar Windows Firewall service, does not need to say much about--windows's basic defense system. However, if you are using Third-party anti-virus software and firewalls, then you can consider shutting down the Windows Firewall service, because in general, Third-party anti-virus software and firewalls can completely replace windows with the system firewall, the effect is better than Windows Firewall.

Hint: Some third party antivirus software will prompt you to shut down the system from the firewall when installing, but after shutting down Windows Firewall actually did not shut down Windows Firewall service, this has caused the resource waste in the intangible. Therefore, in the actual use of the process, after the installation of Third-party antivirus software can choose to manually shut down the Windows Firewall service (set startup mode to "disabled").

Disabling services is significantly effective

In this article, we have listed nearly 20 system services that can be disabled. After personal testing, shutting down these system services, the system started significantly faster-the computer startup time from the original 58 seconds reduced to 50 seconds. Of course, this time will be different from the configuration of the computer, but I believe that for some users with relatively low configuration, the effect will be more obvious!
