PaaS tour of PayPal

At the cloud data center forum, I first heard about Nat Rajesh Natarajan, vice president of PayPa platform engineering and operation. He introduced the cloudization process of PayPal.

About half a year ago, PayPal migrated from VMware's management platform to OpenStack, attracting the attention of OpenStack players. The number of audience in this field was as expected. According to Nat, PayPal provides developers with a platform that makes it easier to develop new businesses. PayPal chose open-source software from the very beginning because there was no supplier lock. PayPal started using OpenStack a year ago and started using OpenShift. He believes that open source is not the most cost-effective method, but it can bring more innovation and face many uncertainties in the future. Nat revealed that 25% of PayPal's current traffic is supported by OpenStack, but many adjustments are still needed. Throughout the cloudification process, it was not a smooth journey:

Nat indicates that a large number of scripts are used, and many engineers may be unemployed. With the continuous cloudification process, Nat considers that PayPal's focus is no longer on hardware devices or OS, but on engineers.

Of course, the benefits brought by cloudification are as follows:

• The application launch time is increased by 10 times.
• It only takes one week for 1500 VMS to go online. The same job took three months for four engineers last year.

Nat does not detail how to migrate data from the original infrastructure platform to OpenStack. He just said that the original basic device is replaced by OpenStack, and the new application platform is directly implemented through PaaS, that is, OpenShift. Nat commented on OpenShift as follows: "We have seen a lot of hopes, but we are not clear about the challenges in the future ."

Nat also shares some experience gained from OpenStack, including:

• Work with suppliers to help use OpenStack.
• A version is later than the open-source version, and is upgraded every two months.

Value of Open Source

The second session I heard was delivered by Steve Curry, founder and president of Metacloud, a company that is very influential in the OpenStack ecosystem. Steve mainly introduced the value of open source software and OpenStack.

Why open source? Steve believes that you can create an ideal product. At the same time, feedback to the community, so that employees are more responsible, the community is willing to listen to feedback from all users, and make adjustments to the product. Commercial software is more willing to serve large customers and cannot serve small customers well.

Steve stressed that China is the largest part of the OpenStack community and thanked Chinese vendors 99cloud and UnitedStack. He also affirmed the advantages of CloudStack, which is very popular in China because it is relatively easy to build at the initial stage.

Steve believes that storage is a gamble. Ceph is a good solution that combines discrete managers. At the same time, SwiftStack is also very good. Steve predicts that in the future, open-source storage manufacturers will deploy their software through hardware and become great companies.

At the Hypervisor layer, Steve rated all platforms. Class A only has KVM, Xen, Hyper-V, and so on.

UnitedStack is helping some internet companies deploy OpenStack. cheng hui shared several trends that are happening within Internet companies:

• OpenStack is replacing the original infrastructure management platform and related software stacks;
• OpenStack is replacing the internal R & D virtualization platform;
• OpenStack is becoming a DevOps platform where engineers participate in R & D.

Cheng hui shared the case of iQiYi adopting OpenStack and provided the capability of 5000 virtual machines to support services such as its advertising system, recommendation search, and video open platform.

There are many active developers in domestic universities, including Shanghai Jiao Tong University, who have run the SDN project Neutron in the production environment and provided the VDC function, at the same time, Shanghai Jiao Tong University is still using Cloud Foundry. In addition, engineers from the National Defense University of Science and Technology are helping Chinese supercomputers deploy OpenStack and submit a speech application at the Hong Kong OpenStack Summit.

Feelings

The audience was enthusiastic about open source, especially those who asked questions about Nat and cheng hui. After the meeting, they were also surrounded. We are very concerned about the problems encountered during the migration of PayPal to OpenStack and the possible problems arising from OpenShift. However, due to commercial secrets or immature reasons, Nat is not detailed.

On the cloud data center and open source cloud topics, there are many local small integrators. They are very interested in OpenShift and Cloud Foundry, and hope to gain some experience and selection suggestions through exchanges with their peers.

She also gave a brief discussion with the BD Director Heidi of the OpenStack Foundation. She introduced the rapid development of OpenStack, and many new features will be announced at the Hong Kong OpenStack Summit. Speaking of expectations for the Chinese market, she said that China is a huge market, and mobile phone users are already twice the total population of the United States. She hopes that local companies can invest more resources in OpenStack.
