The jumper is basically composed of two parts, partly fixed on the motherboard, hard drives and other devices, composed of two or more than two metal jumping needles (Fig. 1; the other part is the jumper cap (Fig. 2), which is an active part, the outer layer is an insulating plastic, the inside is a conductive material and can be inserted on the jumper needle. Connect the two jumper pins.

When the jumper cap is connected to the two jumper pins, it is switched on, the current is passed, we call it on, and when the jumper cap is not buckled, it is disconnected, called off. Now let's see where there are jumpers?

Tips: Adjust the jumper is very important, if the jump is wrong, the light is dead, serious even burn the entire equipment, so in the adjustment jumper must carefully read the instructions, check jumper name, jumper column number and break relationship.

The most common jumpers on the motherboard have two main types, one being only two needles. This two-pin jumper is the simplest, with only two states, on or off (Figure 3).

The other is a three-pin jumper, which can have three states: short between 1 and 2, short between 2 and 3 (Figure 4) and all open (Figure 5).

One, CMOS jumper
CMOS jumpers are mostly near the motherboard battery. Its settings are simple, and there are only two ways: normal and clear CMOS (usually with a description of the jumper near the CMOS jumper). When set to 1-2 (short), the normal state, when set to 2-3 (short), to clear the CMOS settings, can be used to clear the CMOS password, power-on password, etc. (Figure 6).

Second, hard disk jumper
In general, the default setting for the hard drive Factory is as the master disk, which is not required when only one hard drive is installed, but when multiple hard drives are installed, the hard drive jumper needs to be reset. The jumper on the hard disk is simpler, and the jumper position is between the data cable interface and the power cable interface (Figure 7).

There is also a description of the jumper settings on the hard disk surface, taking the Seagate hard drive as an example (Figure 8), which has four main settings: "Master or Single drive", which means that the hard disk is set up or only one hard drive is connected on that channel, i.e. This channel must not have a from disk, "Drive is Slave" (indicates that the current hard disk is a from disk), "Master with a Non-ata compatible Slave" (means that there is a master disk, and from the disk is not compatible with the ATA interface hard drive, This includes older hard disk or SCSI interface hard drives that do not support DMA33, "Cable Select" (using the data cable to select the master and slave, this way to use a specially processed data cable to set the main disk and from the disk, the 28th data line is the selection line, there is the main disk, no is from the disk.) Real support for this function of the data cable, the market is rarely seen.

Tip: There is no uniform standard of hard disk jumper, different brand of hard disk, jumper setting method may be different. Usually we can find the jumper illustration on the hard board, the front of the hard disk or the IDE interface.
Third, optical drive jumper

The optical drive is set to be from the disk by default after the factory. The optical drive jumper is similar to the hard drive jumper, where the jumper position is in the back of the optical drive, between the data line interface and the power cord interface. Generally only master (master disk), Slave (from the disk), Cable Select (cable selection) Three, very few other cases, the various brands of optical drive is almost the case, relatively very standard, making the setting relatively simple. Usually we can find the jumper description icon on the top of the IDE interface (Figure 9).

Tip: If the optical drive and the hard drive share an IDE cable, the optical drive jumper is typically selected as slave and the hard drive is set to master. If the optical drive is a standalone connected IDE line, you can jump into master gracefully.
