When it comes to data processing tools that are most frequently used by business analysts, Excel (which also has a lot of users in the country) will undoubtedly be ranked in the first place. Excel can not achieve advanced data analysis capabilities compared to the professional BI reporting platform (the pivot table is relatively complex), but to meet the daily data statistics and graphics plus easy to spread characteristics, So that the enterprise analysis users are accustomed to using tools such as Excel to handle some of the non-massive data of local presentation and analysis work. Although many enterprises on the line of the BI platform, there are still many users are accustomed to the large number of report data exported to Excel files (or CSV text format) after the local two analysis and adjustment.

So the question is, can these local personal data files be analyzed two times with the powerful graphics and multidimensional analytics capabilities of the BI platform, while it's best not to have the help of the IT staff to get the business users to do it themselves? Today's introduction to the Cognos 10.2.2 new feature: ' My datasets ' will solve this problem for business users.

The new ' My Datasets ' feature helps business users solve the three issues of how to make more efficient use of local data files for analysis:

1. Integrate local data with BI Platform data analysis

When local Excel is imported into the Cognos BI platform, it can be integrated with the data already available on the BI platform (such as business users importing local budget data, and the actual sales execution of data in Bi, which can be combined in a report to view and analyze the two parts of the data)

2. Richer graphics support

Cognos BI currently supports high-level graphics features such as dynamic effects, and supports advanced control functions such as graph linkage, which are richer than Excel.

3. Support more advanced analysis ability

The imported Excel data makes it very easy to gain multidimensional analysis capabilities in the Cognos platform. Multidimensional Analysis in Excel to use the pivot table, relatively complex, and after the introduction to Cognos by simply set the level of the model can be achieved drilling, drill down, rotation, slicing and other multidimensional analysis operations.

In the previous article we introduced the Cognos Insight tool (please refer to the previous article ' Agile bi is really disruptive bi innovation? '), Cognos Insight is a client-side tool that supports the analysis of local files after they are imported, enabling the analysis results to be uploaded to the server for sharing with others. The newly added ' My Datasets ' feature in the Cognos10.2.2 version is a purely web-based feature that relies entirely on COGNOSBI server support. In addition to the need to install the client, this feature also supports the import of custom file management, model design and data file updates and other operations, greatly facilitate the business users of the local personal data file analysis operations. Next we'll take a detailed description of the specific use of my datasets.

first, prepare for: Configure a connection to the personal data set repository

Open IBM Cognos Administration in the IBM Cognos BI Portal and select the Configuration tab. Click the ' New Data source ' button. After entering the connection name, under Connection type in ' Connect ' Also, select ' My DataSet Repository ' and click Next.

Note: When the default installation is complete, the system will have a data repository link named ' Mydatasetsrepository ' for direct use, and the data repository for the personal data set currently supports only the IBM DB2 database.

My dataset repository uses a JDBC connection, enters the appropriate connection information in the connection properties, and tests the connection status as successful.

second, import external data

Open the Cognos Bi homepage, and in the Welcome page ' My Content ' tab, click on the ' My Data set ' page.

650) this.width=650, "alt=" Cognos "class=" Img-thumbnail "src=" http://image.evget.com/images/article/2016/061706. Webp.jpg "/>

The first time I open the ' My Datasets ' item, the display content is empty because no external data related to the current user is imported.

Note: ' My datasets ' are associated with the logged-in user of Cognos Bi, and the content in my datasets after different users log on to the system is the private content of the user, and only that user can maintain their own personal ' My datasets ' External data files, but based on the data file of the package and report that the user can choose to share with other people.

Select the ' Import Data ' button in the upper right corner to open the Import data page. Select Browse to import the local data file. Local data files support formats such as CSV, XLS, xlsx, and so on, and support header rows and commonly used delimiters.

In this example, the CSV sample file ' Salesregion.csv ' is used for import. The first behavior title, with the contents separated by commas.

Note: The default import file size limits are as follows, and can be adjusted as needed.

Preview after exporting the external data file. You can hide data columns that you do not need to import as needed, and you can change the aggregation properties of data items (such as change totals to averages, and so on).

After adjusting the import data source properties, click the ' Publish ' button to publish the imported data source as a personal or public packet, and then report production and analysis can be done. This example is published as a personal packet: ' Salesregion '.

third, report production and data analysis

Open the ' My Folders ' directory to see the newly released ' Salesregion ' packets that users can use to carry out report production and analysis related work.
