The first thing we need to make clear is that the operations master role has and can only have one! If the operations master role works at the forest level, such as the schema master and the domain naming master, there can be only one schema master and domain naming master within a domain forest. If the operations master role is at the domain level, such as the PDC master, the infrastructure master, and the RID master, it means that only one of these operations master roles can be in a domain.
Our experimental topology is shown in the following diagram, with two domain controllers in the adtest.com domain, Florence and Firenze. Florence is the first domain controller in the domain, all the operations master roles are currently on Florence, and we have experimented with how to toggle the operations master roles between Florence and Firenze.
In fact, when we uninstall Active Directory on a domain controller with Dcpromo, the domain controller automatically transfers its own operational master role to its replication partner, a process that requires no administrator intervention at all. But if we want to specify a domain controller to be responsible for the operations master role, we need to do it manually. Let's first show you how to transfer five operations master roles from Florence to Firenze with an MMC console.
A shift from Florence to Firenze
Open Active Directory Users and Computers on Florence, as shown in the following illustration, right click on the domain name and select "Operations Master" from the menu.
