Comparison between self-built storage servers and network Disks

As a network management unit, it is no stranger to FTP and other self-built storage services, and cloud storage, which has recently been developing in full swing, cannot turn a blind eye to it. after some trial and understanding, I think it is time to say goodbye to the self-built LAN storage.

Self-built LAN storage is similar to FTP and network sharing. place a storage server in the LAN, enable ftp or network sharing, create a bunch of users and create directories for each user. After setting a series of permissions, you can enter the service.

Cloud storage does not need to prepare servers. Files are directly stored on the Internet. Each user can register his/her own account. In addition to storing files, there are other functions such as sharing and collaboration.

I recently used a lot of fast-enough network disks, and I have a good understanding of fast-enough network disks. Below I will use a fast-enough network disk as an example to compare it with self-built storage.

I. Security

The most important thing about the storage service is not to lose files. if a file that has worked hard for more than half a year is lost, it is really a dead heart. however, the servers and hard disks are all machines, and the machines will be broken. Therefore, a network administrator needs to take high risks to run self-built storage in the unit. the solution is to pay full attention to backup and regularly back up data. But how many network administrators are doing this. in addition, the disk array can be highly redundant when conditions are met. redundant disk arrays commonly use RAID5, raid1, and raid10. RAID5 to form an array with more than three disks. When this array lacks one disk, data can still be recovered, the read/write performance is higher than that of a single disk. raid1 uses two disks to form an array. All data is written in dual copies. Therefore, the write performance is inferior to that of a single disk.
Raid10 uses an even number of disks to form an array. In fact, it is composed of multiple RAID 1 arrays. In simple terms, four disks are used as two disks, and six disks are used as three disks. if it is a raid 10 consisting of six disks, it is actually a RAID 1 consisting of two disks, a total of three RAID 1 and then a RAID 0. In this case, each group of RAID 1 breaks down a disk and data will not be lost. therefore, no matter which raid type is used, if two hard disks are damaged, data may be lost. this is not impossible. I have seen with my own eyes that the server disk array of a friend organization cannot recover data.

Let's see how cloud storage solves this problem. according to the information displayed in quick enough user manual, the Network Disk automatically copies at least three copies of received data to different servers. this at least indicates that the servers and hard disks of the fast enough network disk will also be bad, otherwise they will not have to be so troublesome. it is said that this automatic replication will also be performed across data centers. more than three redundant backups should be enough to ensure data will not be lost.

Ii. Privacy

In this regard, Edison Chen has learned a bloody lesson. however, Edison Chen put the photos in his own computer and put them in others' hands. therefore, there is no difference between private things stored in your computer, in the LAN, or on the Internet.

The important thing is encryption!

The modern encryption algorithm is already very strong. You can use WinRAR software to encrypt files. encrypted Files are hard to crack. using the exhaustive method may allow a high-performance computer to be counted for hundreds of years and nothing can be achieved.

Therefore, encryption of files before they are stored anywhere is an important means to protect privacy.

Iii. Version backtracking

Sometimes important files are overwritten by files with the same name, and it is difficult to retrieve the original file. self-built storage seems unable to deal with such problems. in a fast enough network disk, files with the same name will save 5 Historical versions, which is very useful!

4. Service Availability

As mentioned above, the server will crash and crash. at this time, the data may not be lost, but it is necessary to wait for the server to repair the new data. cloud storage services are provided by a large number of servers, and there is basically no possibility of downtime.

5. Convenient access

Access convenience is naturally the strength of cloud storage. Because data is stored on the internet, it can be accessed at any time. this is an advantage that self-built servers cannot achieve. Even if self-built servers are connected to the Internet, they cannot achieve high-speed access throughout the country, even if the connectivity between North and South is still unsolved. not to mention bandwidth rent and other issues. cloud storage providers such as fast enough network disks have servers in China Telecom and China Unicom. files stored in them can be quickly accessed in China Telecom and CEN, which is very convenient. there is also an android client that can access the online storage using a mobile phone, or even upload a photo to the online storage using a mobile phone.

Vi. Capacity

At present, the capacity of various free network disks has reached dozens of GB, and some paid network disks have reached GB. moreover, the capacity provided by the network disk is rapidly increasing. of course, you can install several T-level disks on self-built servers, but are these disks actually used effectively?

7. ease of use

Now all kinds of network disks have released PC clients, which are very convenient to use. the synchronization tool can synchronize directories on multiple computers. clients that are fast enough can also bind multiple directories for automatic synchronization. If you do not want to synchronize all contents, you can also use the selective synchronization function. it is more difficult to use than FTP or network sharing.

From the above analysis, we can see that with the development of Internet technology, cloud storage will become more and more powerful, because of its security and stability, and rich network functions, FTP and other self-built LAN storage facilities will certainly be replaced.
