For the RIP Protocol, there are two types: Version 1 and version 2. Most of the time, we need to make these two versions compatible. Are these two versions compatible? What are the differences between the two versions? Next we will discuss the compatibility between the RIP V2 protocol and V1.
The RIP-V1 uses a flexible approach for Route updates. if the version FIELD of the update packet is indicated as RIP version 1, but all UNUSED fields (unused field) if all bits are set to 1, the update packet will be discarded. if the version field is set to greater than 1, fields defined as unused in version 1 will be ignored, as a result, a new version of the protocol like RIP V2 can be backward compatible with the RIP-V1.
"Compatibility switch", used to allow interoperability between version 1 and Version 2:
◆ RIP-1 -- only messages with r1_1 are transmitted;
◆ RIP-1 compatibility -- enable r12002 to use broadcast instead of multicast to advertise messages so that r12001 can receive them;
◆ The RIP-2--RIP V2 protocol uses multicast to advertise a message to the destination address 224.0.0.9.
◆ NONE -- do not send messages (you can use the passive-interface command to complete)
The receiving control switch is used to control the receiving of updates 。
◆ RIP-1ONLY
◆ RIP-2ONLY
◆ BOTH
◆ NONE -- Update Not accepted
The NONE function can filter UDP source port 520 by using the access list, or configure a NETWORK statement that does not contain this interface, or configure a route Filter list 。
Search for classless routes in RIP V2
Classless routing: first, match the destination address with the primary network address in the route selection table, and then match the primary network subnet, this packet will be discarded 。
This type of CLASSLESS protocol can also be changed using the Global Command 。
When a Router performs a classless Routing Query, it does not pay attention to the category of the destination address. The alternative method is, it performs a bit-by-bit best match between the destination address and all known routes 。
This performance becomes very useful when working with the default route. When some other features of the classless routing protocol are added, the classless routing lookup function becomes more powerful 。
