Article title: comprehensive open-source and innovative ora13 desktop improvement overview. Linux is a technology channel of the IT lab in China. Includes basic categories such as desktop applications, Linux system management, kernel research, embedded systems, and open source.

For ordinary desktop users, the most important improvement of Fedora 13 is the expansion of Nvidia's experimental 3D support, and the automatic installation of the driver for the printer driver. In addition, some other new features that are not widely known are worth trying, such as the simple backup tool D é j à Dup, better camera support, and a redesigned user management interface. Fedora is a Linux release designed to integrate the latest free and open source software. for desktop users, many of the software packages it chooses are experimental projects, it may be unstable due to lack of maturity. For those who like to taste it, Fedora 13 is a suitable Linux release.

The following describes some new features of Fedora 13 in desktop use:

  Complete PackageKit integration

When you burn an audio CD, Brasero automatically installs the missing GStreamer encoder. File-Roeller can install missing tools to process archive files.

  Redesigned User Management Interface

This feature of Fedora 13 is a technology preview loading option that shows future development directions and progress.

The user account tool has been completely redesigned. The tool can set user personal information and add personal data photos or icons. At the same time, it can help users generate strong passwords, set additional logon options such as automatic logon, and determine the role of the user, such as a single user on a personal notebook or a public system administrator. These new features are designed and implemented by some members of the Fedora Desktop SIG.

To install and try a new user account tool, install accountsdialog and accountsservice, and then run the accounts-dialog command.

Experimental 3D support extended to Nvidia Nouveau drivers

Previously, Fedora 12 provided experimental 3D support for newer ATI graphics cards in the free and open source Radeon driver, the experimental 3D support in ORA 13 has now been extended to the nouveau driver for some NVIDIA graphics cards. Fedora and its sponsors, Red Hat, are committed to improving the quality and coverage of the graphics card driver with full free acceleration. At the same time, we support user selection and do not prevent users from using closed-source proprietary drivers. we also realize that these drivers sometimes conflict with the software written by the FOSS community members and cause problems. We hope to use our own drivers to supplement the work of the FOSS community to respect our commitment to the FOSS community and the efforts of the upstream Nouveau community to improve the driver. You only need to install mesa-dri-drivers-experimental to experience this new feature.

Color management allows you to set output gamma tables for most monitors, including hot swapping monitors in use. You can also double-click to install the ICC or ICM files provided by the vendor, use external devices to correct the display and scanner, and use the ArgyllCMS package for color collection. Written by Red Hat engineers and Fedora contributor Richard Hughes.

Color management helps you control the color accuracy of the display, printer, and scanner output.

  Improvements to Nautilus

By default, the Nautilus file manager is in browser mode. The user interface in this mode is reorganized. In addition, nautilus can implement dual directories on both sides in the new split browsing mode.

The Spatial mode is still available as an option.

Gnote has some new add-ons and complies with the XDG directory standards of freeyuntop.org. Notes stored in previous versions are automatically transferred from. gnote in the user's home directory to. local/share/gnote.

  Gnome dvb daemon

With the gnome dvb daemon, Totem supports DVB, which provides Electronic Program Guide (EPG) support for ease of use and adjustment, and export through UPNP (using Rygel) TV channels.

  Automatically install language packs

Many packages, such as OpenOffice.org, Eclipse, and KDE, are independently packaged into langpacks due to the package size. Now with the langpack plugin, yum will automatically download and install yum when yum detects that a language pack is required and is the language pack of the software package you need. You do not need to install language support for these kits. In the future, this feature will be extended to the entire system.

  KDE PulseAudio integration

One of the features of KDE 4.4 is the integration of Fedora's default sound management, PulseAudio. Fedora 13 brings the following new features to KDE users:

Phonon will detect PulseAudio and will not display non-PulseAudio devices when PulseAudio is running.

PulseAudio adds module-device-manager to allow Phonon to manage PulseAudio devices.

In the preceding method, Phonon can be used to set the device priority level discovered by PulseAudio.

KMix displays the PulseAudio volume, which includes the volume of each program and allows the program to switch between devices.

The traditional back-end ALSA of KMix will still exist. use the command export KMIX_PULSEAUDIO_DISABLE = 1 to forcibly use it, even if PulseAudio has been detected.

From Live CD to Live USB

In the previous Fedora release, desktop Live images were in CD format. The limit of the CD disk 700M gradually affects the user experience. Therefore, the Fedora Desktop Team released a 1 GB Live USB in this release to replace it. Fedora 13 desktop Live images are no longer suitable for CD. The result is that Openoffice.org replaces Abiword with the GIMP graphic editing program and becomes the default program provided by the Live image.

For more information about how to create Live USB, see here. You can also burn this image to a DVD. If your computer does not support USB boot, or you do not have a DVD drive, you can use a network installation or a conventional CD installation CD.
