Most of the software now uses standard Windows installation mode, and users simply double-click Setup. EXE file can be easily installed. However, this installation also has a disadvantage: Many programs are installed by default to the operating system partition (the majority of users choose c), so after a period of time, the free space of C disk will inevitably become smaller. Perhaps unknowingly, you found that the C disk is only hundreds of trillion or even dozens of trillion! Re-partitioning and formatting the hard disk is fine, but it's cumbersome to operate, and there are many limitations. What most users want is to "eliminate" the lack of disk space while keeping the original system and data from being corrupted. In this article, let's explore the principles, methods, and techniques of disk space release.

The most feasible way to free up space in the system partition that fills the data is, of course, to transfer the data. But before we move the data, we should be aware of what is in the system partition, which is movable and which cannot be moved. Because of the rush to move data or files, it is likely to cause the program can not find the path or lack of necessary dynamic links, database files and illegal operation. In general, removable data is an option already provided by Windows or the application itself-such as Windows allows you to set the location where virtual memory is stored, IE allows you to set the location where cached files are saved, and some system folder path settings are hidden in the registry. Needs to be modified manually or through tools. There are documents, messages, which are generated by the application, are generally removable. Files that are not removable are relatively complex, and NTFS partitions, compressed file partitions with Windows Self compression, typically have a large number of data that cannot be moved, and the operations of these partitions are carefully guarded.

Transfer removable data to make room for the system

1. Grasp the principle of transfer data as far as possible to move a single, large capacity of data, so that the effect of space to make a significant, in case of error also easy to find reasons.

If you're moving data that contains many subdirectories and multiple files, not only does it not work, it's not easy to find out what files are being moved.

2. Move file Follow me.

(1) In the mobile virtual system partition, the largest removable file is virtual memory, which is usually 1.5 times times the physical memory of the system. If you are a user of Windows 98/me, you can change the virtual memory settings directly in the system options. How to set up virtual memory I believe you have learned, here no longer say. It is important to note that after modifying the system virtual memory, it is necessary to restart the computer changes to take effect; in Windows 2000/XP, the system allows multiple partitions to have virtual memory at the same time, so after changing the virtual memory location, be sure to select the partition where the virtual memory originally resides, and then select No paging Radio button, and finally click the "Settings" button.

(2) Close hibernation file

The second large file in the system partition is the hibernation file. In the default state, the hibernate file is placed on the Windows installation partition and there is no option to change the path. Users can only disable the Hibernate feature by opening Control Panel, then double-clicking the Power Options icon, selecting the Hibernate tab, emptying the check box before the Hibernate enabled option, and then clicking OK to exit, and Windows will automatically delete the file. Of course, if you need to enable hibernation in the future, simply select the check box in the "Enable Hibernate" option on this page.

(3) Transfer of temporary documents

The third-largest type of file in the system partition is the temporary file for windows and IE. This includes downloading and browsing the required buffers, temporary files generated by the print task, or system backups, and so on. We can move ie temporary folders in IE options by opening IE, clicking Internet Options under the Tools menu, and then clicking the "Settings" button under the General tab.

Then, in the dialog box shown in Figure 1, click the Move Folder button, and in the Open Browse dialog box, specify a new folder that you have previously built on the other partitions.

Next, set the storage path for the system Temp folder. Windows 98 Users if the system is installed in C disk, the temporary file is stored in the C:temp directory by default, we can change the Autoexec.bat file "set Temp=c:temp" to "set Temp=d:temp" (where D: Temp can be any folder that already exists on the hard disk partition, so you can set up temporary files in D disk. Windows 2000/XP Users can open the System Properties, Advanced tab, and then click the Environment Variables button to open the interface shown in Figure 2, with the mouse click in the System Variables window to select the variable (in this case, "TEMP" and "TMP" two variables) where you want to modify the path. Then click the Edit button in the middle of the dialog box (note: Click the Edit button in the upper window of the dialog box to change the location of the current user's variable save, and click the Edit button under the window below the dialog box to modify the save location of all the user variables that use the operating system. When you have finished setting up, click OK to exit.

3. Moving programs

(1) Move the program under Windows XP

If you're a Windows XP user, moving a program is pretty straightforward: Click the file Transfer and Setup Wizard command under Start, All programs, accessories, and system tools to open the File Conversion and Setup Wizard. For the use of the wizard, you can press F1 on the desktop to open the Windows XP Help and Support Center, and then type the file conversion and Setup Wizard to search after search.

(2) with the help of PartitionMagic mobile program

After a Windows 98 user has fully installed the PartitionMagic, the Magicmover tool makes it easy to move programs. Click the Magicmover command under Start, program, PowerQuest PartitionMagic to open the Magicmover main interface, and then browse the drives and folders in the list box to select the application you want to move. Magicmover will automatically scan all the drives, automatically analyze your selections, and after scanning, in the "Select the destination folder" box, indicate where you want to move the application, determine the new path and press the prompt to move. During the move, Magicmover automatically updates the registry and completes the related links automatically. When the move is complete, Magicmover displays summary information about the actions that have been performed, including the name of the application and the size of the file being moved, and so on.

(3) using the Norton Toolkit for uninstall and recovery functions

Norton Toolkit (Norton Utilities) is a very popular system tool, we can use its CleanSweep tools to skillfully implement the transfer of the application, do not need to reinstall the program, of course, the application personalization will be retained. Select "CleanUp" in CleanSweep and click Uninstall Wizard to uninstall the program first. As shown in Figure 3, select the program you want to uninstall in the list of programs, select and click the Next button, and the program will let you specify where to place the backup file, by default, in the subfolder "Backup" under the Norton CleanSweep folder. Click the Next button, CleanSweep will ask you whether you want to confirm each item to be deleted, generally select "NO", click "Next" button, click "Finish" button in the next window to start the uninstall and backup of the program. Once the program has been uninstalled, we can use its recovery function to transfer the program:

In the CleanSweep main interface click the "Programs" button, select "Restore Wizard", the program will ask you if you want to restore the last uninstall of the program, select "Yes" and click "Next", the default value is to recover all the files just deleted, click "Next" By program prompts the user to accept the default option if they have the same file to overwrite.

The next step is more critical:

The program asks the user whether to return the program to its original location. Since our purpose is to move the application, you should select the "No,let me Select the location" (No, let me choose the location) in the interface shown in Figure 4. When you click Next, you can select the target path after the program is restored in the Open dialog box! Then click the Next button until the Finish button appears in the window, and when you click the button, you start the program's recovery, and then you are prompted to remove the backup of the program when you are finished. At this point, the program you selected is moved to a new location.

Special Note: by extension, this method can be used to transplant a program to another computer: in "Back Wizard", the backup on the target computer, the target computer installed CleanSweep after the "Restore Wizard" function, Restore this backup just as described in the previous method. Note If a folder with the same name exists in the target partition, it should be renamed and then restored, otherwise the contents of the original folder will be overwritten. Purge file resizing partitions if the user is moving data, there is still insufficient disk space, as well as the last two strokes of purging files and adjusting partitions. However, both of these methods have a certain risk, it is recommended that users should not use. If you must use the method of purging files, recommended "Windows Optimization Master" and other optimization software to achieve, note that before you clear the file, be sure to make a backup; If you want to adjust the hard disk partition method to solve the system partition space tension problem, it is recommended to use the "Hard Disk Partition Wizard" to do, But it also exists with the Chinese long file name compatibility is not good, midway panic or after adjustment can not access the directory, etc., so before use must back up the good data and hard disk partition table.

For you to introduce so many mobile data operations, although theoretically the tool software will be automatically completed for us, but we should also take into account in case of error remedy. The best way of course is to back up the registry, copy a copy of the program to other partitions, so that once the error can directly copy the program to the original path, and then restore the registry.
