· The frontend bus frequency supported by 845, 845d, and 845gl is 400 MHz. The frontend bus frequency supported by 845e, 845g, 845ge, 845pe, 845gv, and 865p is 533 MHz, the frontend bus frequency supported by 865pe, 865 GB, and 865gv is 800 MHz.

· 865 and 845 are all 478 plug-ins (478 is the CPU plug-in, that is, the number of plug-in pins); 915, 945, 965, and 975 are all 775 plug-ins; there are also 865 plug-ins in 775, but the improved version of the motherboard of the last generation of 478 plug-ins.

Motherboard chipset
The chipset (chipset) is the core component of the main board. It is usually divided into the north bridge chip and the south bridge chip according to the different positions on the main board. Beiqiao chip provides support for CPU type and clock speed, memory type and maximum capacity, ISA/PCI/AGP slot, and ECC error correction. The nanqiao chip provides KBC (keyboard controller), RTC (Real-time clock Controller), USB (Universal Serial Bus), ultra DMA/33 (66) eide data transmission mode and ACPI (Advanced Energy Management) support. The North Bridge Chip plays a dominant role, also known as the main bridge (host bridge). Generally, the name of the chipset is named by the name of the North Bridge Chip.

Take Intel Platform as an Example

1. From 845 series to 915 series (excluding 915 Series)
· PE is a mainstream version with no integrated video card. It supports mainstream FSB and memory at that time, and supports AGP slots.
· E is not a simplified version, but an evolutionary version. It is special that 845e is the only version with the E suffix. Compared with 845d, it adds 533 MHz FSB support, compared with 845g, 845e is commonly used for entry-level servers because it increases the support for ECC memory.
· G is the mainstream Integrated Video Card chipset and supports the AGP slot. Other parameters are similar to PE.
· GV and GL are integrated into the simplified version of the video card chipset, and do not support the AGP slot. The other parameters of GV are the same as g, while GL is reduced.
· Ge, compared with G, is an evolutionary version of the integrated graphics card chipset, and also supports the AGP slot.
P can be enhanced, for example, 875 P, or simplified, for example, 865 p.

1 845 series chipset 82845e/82845gl/82845g/82845gv/82845ge/82845pe, except 82845gl, all support 533 MHz FSB (82845gl only supports 400 MHz FSB), supports memory, all 845 series North Bridge Support a maximum of 2 GB memory. 82845gl/82845e supports DDR 266, And the rest support DDR 333. Except 82845gl/82845gv, all of them support the AGP 4x specification.

3 865 series chipset 82865 P/82865g/82865pe/82865gv/82848 P, except 82865 P, all support 800 MHz FSB, DDR 400 (82865 P only support 533 MHz FSB, DDR 333), in addition to 82848 P, both support dual-channel memory and a maximum of 4 GB memory capacity (82848 P only supports a single channel of up to 2 GB memory), in addition to 82865gv, both support The AGP 8x specification.

 

Ii. 915 series and later
· P is the mainstream version, no integrated graphics card, support the mainstream FSB and memory at that time, support PCI-E x16 slots.
· PL is a simplified version relative to P, shrinking in the FSB and memory supported, no integrated graphics card, but also supports PCI-E x16.
· G is the mainstream integrated graphics card chipset and supports PCI-E x16 slots, other parameters are similar to P.
· GV and GL are integrated graphics card simplified version of the chipset, does not support PCI-E x16 slot, other parameters GV and G are the same, GL has shrunk.
· X and Xe are enhanced compared to P, with no integrated graphics card and support for PCI-E x16 slots.

In general, there are no strict naming rules for Intel chipset, but this is generally the case above. In addition, the naming method of the Intel chipset may change, and the suffix is removed, and the prefix is used, such as p965 and q965.

1. In terms of the supported frontend bus frequency, 82910gl only supports 533 MHz FSB, while 82925xe supports 1066 MHz FSB. The remaining 82915 P, 82915g, 82915gv, and 82925x support 800 MHz FSB.

In terms of memory support, 82910gl only supports DDR memory (DDR 400), while 82925x and 82925xe only support DDR2 memory (DDR2 533 ), the remaining 82915 P, 82915g, and 82915gv support both DDR memory (DDR 400) and DDR2 memory (DDR2 533). All these six Northbridge chips support dual-channel memory technology, the maximum memory capacity is 4 GB.

Iii. After the 965 Series

Starting from the 965 series chipset, Intel changed the name of the chipset, changed the letter representing the chipset function from the suffix to the prefix, and subdivided different user groups, for example, p965, g965, q965, and q963.

· P is the mainstream chipset version for individual users, with no integrated graphics card, supporting FSB and memory at that time mainstream, supporting PCI-E x16 slots.
· G is the mainstream integrated graphics card chipset for individual users, and supports PCI-E x16 slots, other parameters are similar to P.
· Q is an enterprise-level desktop chipset for commercial users. It has an integrated graphics card similar to G. In addition to all functions of G, it also has special functions for commercial users, for example, active management technology.

In addition, when the function prefix is the same, the subsequent numbers are used to differentiate performance. Low numbers indicate that the supported memory or FSB is simplified. For example, compared with q965, q963 only supports DDR2 667.
