This is a new feature of Internet Explorer 8. When you open more than one tab in a browser, a iexplore.exe process is created (in Internet Explorer 7, the same window, regardless of how many tabs are open, generates only one iexplore.exe process). The advantage of this design is that if one of the pages you are browsing crashes, it will not cause the entire browser to restart, so that other pages can still function well.
